(CNN)Donald Trump's glittering empire of New York skyscrapers and Atlantic City casinos have long had a darker side, allegations that the mob helped build them.
Trump's alleged ties to New York and Philadelphia crime families go back decades and have been recounted in a book, newspapers and government records.
"The mob connections of Donald are extraordinarily extensive," New York investigative journalist Wayne Barrett told CNN in an interview.

Donald Trump built condominium apartment towers with concrete, not steel, superstructures because virtually every developer in the past fifty years used concrete.
The article tries, at great length, to suggest that Trump's choice of concrete showed that he was partial to a mafia-controlled product.
That is absurd.

The most significant of the alleged “mob ties” is when Trump bought a piece of real estate from a mob figure in order to complete a parcel upon which to build a casino. There is no allegation or basis for suspicion that this was anything other than an ordinary commercial transaction. Calling that a “mob tie” abuses the term.
