I just finished reading Jerry Kramer’s “Instant Replay”, in which he talked about Alex Karras. He said he was the meanest, nastiest, scariest defensive lineman he ever played against.

He used to actually have nightmares about having to block him.

They had a rookie guard on the team who came in one season (can’t remember if it was Jerry Kramer or Fuzzy Thurston who was out) and the first game the rookie played against Karras, when asked after the game in an interview, said he was unimpressed and hadn’t seen any moves he didn’t think he could handle.

What he didn’t know was that Karras was trying to play through an injury.

The next game Karras destroyed him. Actually demolished him. I think he might even have knocked him out cold, and as he lay on the ground, Karras stood over him and snarled “How do you like those moves, Ass Face?”

If that really bugged you, you could have always turn off the TV. By the numbers, not too many of you did.

Well, to be fair, there were only three stations back then. lol...

Alex Karras: Mongo like Candy! :)

RIP Frank. Bet there’s a heck of a scrimmage in Heaven tonight.

My earliest memory of Frank Gifford was in the 1958 NFL Championship when he scored on a 15-yard pass from Giant quarterback Charley Conerly.

Of course, that was the first National Football League playoff game to go into sudden death before a nation-wide audience. When the Colt's Alan Ameche scored on a third down 1-yard touchdown run to win the game, 23–17, the future of the NFL was set to explode.

I was delighted in the outcome as I was an 11-year old diehard Colts fan then as was my father who never stopped reminding any and all that the Colts were actually the old 1952 Dallas Texans.

Rest in peace, Frank. Say "Hi!" to my old Pappy... he'll be the one telling you your lost to the Dallas Texans in "The Greatest Game Ever Played"

I would tune in just to hear Cosell. I think he was one of the greaste sports broadcasters of all time.

I never paid much attention to Cosell's rhetoric. I tuned in to MNF (and MNB which Cosell was on too) to see the game. RIP Giff, Dandy, Alex, and Howie. Say hi to Roone and Chet for us.

ff

PS I couldn't find Cosell's "little monkey" remark re Alvin Garrett on YT.

I had no idea he was 84 years old thought he was much younger...

Me too. Less than ten years ago, he violated a raft of zoning issues at his Florida home. At that age, why would he run the risk of sullying his good name?

Frank Gifford. Frank. Giff. The Giffmeister. A man’s man. A warrior and a poet. Yin and Yang. Gone at 84. Adieu...

I remember his cameo in the flick “Paper Lion”, along with other contemporaries like Alex Karras, Joe Schmidt and Vince Lombardi. Giff seemed right at home in the Swinging ‘60s.

Fast forward a few decades and he got reeled in by Kathie Lee Epstein and sired 2 children with her. Ah, the joys of fatherhood when you’re 117 years old.

My fondest memories of The Giffmeister were when the sordid details of his affair with an airline stewardess were released. Whoa, Nellie!!! (yes, I know that’s Keith Jackson’s line)

RIP, Giff. You and your loins earned it.
