So.. they don’t attend the school, but can be on the team?
Fine.. I’m not the CEO of Exxon, can I still get the benefits?
If you are a stockholder, yes. People who home-school their kids are still required to pay that portion of their property taxes that go to fund schools.
Their parents pay their taxes to support the public schools, and their kids are of age. If they live in the district, they should be able to participate.
It’s about time their families get to use some of the services they help pay for.
Do their parents pay taxes to the schools?
OH does this, too, for all activities. Homeschool students can participate in activities at the school where they would've been assigned. It's totally fair, since they're assigned to that district and are choosing an alternative way to learn.
(I don't know if this is the case in other states). In OH there as an at-home public school option that's free. Now, schools can't force students to attend classes at the public school if they want to be involved in teams or activities. Public school home-school option is a terrific safety valve so parents aren't forced to send their children to unruly schools.
“Fine.. Im not the CEO of Exxon, can I still get the benefits?”
Think of it this way: You pay the CEO of Exxon, and since you pay him, you get to tell him what to do.
That’s sort of what it is like for taxpaying homeschool families. They pay for the school sports programs, so (now) their kids get to play, if they want.
Not quite.
The family lives in the district, so they pay taxes to support the team. If the child is eligible by age, physical condition, etc., they are allowed to use some of the support provided by their parents as a basis for being on the team.
