Donald Trump says that he supports shutting down the government to defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of a series of controversial undercover videos of organization officials.
The Republican presidential contender was asked on The Hugh Hewitt show Monday night if he supported the move. "Well I can tell you this: I would," Trump replied.
Planned Parenthood has been under attack from Republicans over videos that show officials discussing the sale of fetal tissue for medical research. The pro-abortion rights group argues the videos have been heavily edited and are misleading, and that it only accepts compensation to cover expenses.
A procedural vote on the issue was filibustered by Democrats in the Senate on Monday.
Republicans were badly hurt in 2013 by the government shutdown, which was triggered by an effort to defund ObamaCare.

Trump said he also supported the move to defund ObamaCare in 2013.
"I was also in support if the Republicans stuck together you could have done it with ObamaCare also, but the Republicans decided not to stick together and they left a few people out there like Ted Cruz," he said. "You know, they left a lot of the people that really went in and wanted to do the job and you know what? If they had stuck together they would have won that battle."
"I think you have to in this case also, yes," he added.
Trump's statement is sure to put more pressure on Republicans to back defunding of Planned Parenthood, especially as his remarks come days before the first GOP debate.
Trump has led a series of polls measuring the support of GOP presidential candidates.
I know. The Hill regurgitates the Dem talking points without let up.
It’s true.
A colleague in London was watching the BBC and called me in late 2013 to tell me “the republicans were winning!” only to see them a week later go crashing down in defeat when Boehner caved.
The BBC was showing the truth whereas the American media circled the wagons around federal government and became obsessed with painting republicans like Ted Cruz as ‘bomb throwers’.
Had they stuck together they would have defeated Obama and the tone since would have been much different. This is Boehner’s legacy.
Nice statement-—and Cruz was praised in the article (in case you didn’t bother to read it) by Trump. But I didn’t see him call for a government shutdown. I guess you can say “well, everything in our power means that,” but it isn’t specific.
Forget Trump for a moment.
The narrative on PP has significantly changed and the Establishment is not saying a damn word.
It is no longer about ghouls ripping out fetuses for sale on the open market. It is about “heavily edited” video, which has been proven not to be the case.
Meanwhile this corrupt Republican House and Senate will keep funding everything Obama wants. The debt just keeps soaring. As for the Democratic side...we never had any faith in them. The Republicans have been useless.
And The rest of the GOPeahens are quaking in their girdles and Depends, hoping that The Donald would just go away....he isn’t.
I read about aborted fetuses being used in the production of certain cosmetics many years ago. This ghoulery has been going on for a long, long time.
I immediately think “a page out of the Third Reich playbook” about this; there’s really no difference.
YES! GO DONALD
” The pro-abortion rights group argues the videos have been heavily edited and are misleading, and that it only”
What a bold faced lie!
The GOP took over the Senate in the next election.
If one side is always willing to play hardball--even to ludicrous degrees;--and the other side always finds an excuse not to; which side wins? Any doubt about it?
The only real reason shutting down the Government, over a question of principle, hurts any party, is by the power of suggestion. Had the Republicans shown the common sense & integrity to stand fast, on any matter of principal, a large part of the population that is not presently ideological, would have stopped to listen, and many new supporters would have been won over--assuming, of course, that men like Ted Cruz, who can articulate the reasoning behind the firm stand, were not sabotaged by those who were elected to take the same position.
Don't want to sound like a broken record. But those Republicans who have no guts, no common sense, and no real commitment to principle; have no future.
Exactly so!
Dr. Carson sounds too much like Michael Jackson, imho. Over controlled.
On the issue of de-funding, his quiet response, “...but isn’t that what Obamacare is for?” was a direct hit akin to a salvo from all the USS Missouri’s guns but without affect and therefore without effect.
With some elevated emotion it would have made a powerful and effective sound bite. Instead, it sounded like someone reading a menu at the next table. It was a situation that called for some righteous outrage...that was missing.
So I wonder if anything else is missing in his character.
Having reached geezerdom, along the way I’ve seen too many without affect that were hiding some deeper problem.
That 2011 two week shutdown was ridiculous.
Obamacare was exempt from the shutdown, yet that was the initial stated goal of it.(this was known here before it even started.
When that goal failed the NEW stated goal was just cutting spending, with individual spending bills like funding the troops, we were not supposed to mention defunding Obamacare anymore because it stayed funded.(also because we were supposed to claim that Cruz + were against a shutdown)
Then they passed a bill that payed federal employees for their time off (two week shutdown) to take effect AFTER the shutdown was ended.
So many confused and contradictory messages, no chance of success.
Now this PP thing could be played right as it really looks bad for them.

Incremental victories are still victories, and look at what the left has done incrementally over the last 60 years...
As the last year has shown, electing progressive Republicans is not a victory. In fact it has turned out worse than just having the Dems in power because now there is a “bipartisan” veneer to the obama agenda.

Rand was asked about shutting down the government over PP and he ran away as fast as he could from the idea. What a beltway chicken he is.
>>If the GOP crowd of candidates cant communicate some passion like this, theyll never overcome Trump. People are mad.
