Donald Trump says that he supports shutting down the government to defund Planned Parenthood in the wake of a series of controversial undercover videos of organization officials.
The Republican presidential contender was asked on The Hugh Hewitt show Monday night if he supported the move. "Well I can tell you this: I would," Trump replied.
Planned Parenthood has been under attack from Republicans over videos that show officials discussing the sale of fetal tissue for medical research. The pro-abortion rights group argues the videos have been heavily edited and are misleading, and that it only accepts compensation to cover expenses.
A procedural vote on the issue was filibustered by Democrats in the Senate on Monday.
Republicans were badly hurt in 2013 by the government shutdown, which was triggered by an effort to defund ObamaCare.

Trump said he also supported the move to defund ObamaCare in 2013.
"I was also in support if the Republicans stuck together you could have done it with ObamaCare also, but the Republicans decided not to stick together and they left a few people out there like Ted Cruz," he said. "You know, they left a lot of the people that really went in and wanted to do the job and you know what? If they had stuck together they would have won that battle."
"I think you have to in this case also, yes," he added.
Trump's statement is sure to put more pressure on Republicans to back defunding of Planned Parenthood, especially as his remarks come days before the first GOP debate.
Trump has led a series of polls measuring the support of GOP presidential candidates.
I doubt that. They called for “defunding,” but who specifically called for shutting down the government? I’d have to see a transcript of that one.
She called for shutting down the government? Transcript, please. I just don’t believe it.
And, again, Trump specifically cited Cruz’s courage on that. Not one other person has.
Ben Carson has said all the right facts about PP targeting the black community and the history of Margaret Sangor. But he’s used such sophisticated word and his sweet controlled speaking voice no one is paying attention -particularly no one in the inner democrat city.
If Trump would repeat the same information using his enthusiasm and bombastic style and simple words the Republicans would gain a foothold the size they have never had before.
Yes, the shutdown in September 2013 certainly killed them with voters in 2014, all right.
I fear their opposition to using the power the Constitution gives them runs a lot deeper than concern about elections.
Carly Fiorina said that it would be worth shutting down government to defund PP.
No, the onus is on you to show that Walker has called for shutting down the government on this. Don’t give me your “Trumpasms” nonsense. The fact is, your guy not only expanded Medicaid, but so far did not call for shutting down the government over this. Only Trump has-—unless you have a transcript otherwise.
Can the House not stop funding? I thought it started there?
Trump also said republicans should have stood with Cruz on the shutdown over Obamacare.
He said if they had stuck together they would have won.
Good gawd! I could swear Donald has Ted Cruz planted into his brain and heart. I am beginning to really like the idea of President Trump.
Yes of course Ted Cruz has been most passionate about shutting down government to defund PP because that is what it would take! The way McConnell has screwed up the PP defunding by not attaching it to the highway bill (which Ted heroically pointed out last week) and by having the little weasel Rand Paul bring it up as a show vote, there is no consequence when Obama threatens to veto it. It simply dies one way or the other.
But the highway bill can has been kicked down the road for 5 months. So when it comes back up for funding, then attach a PP defund rider and let Obama veto a must-pass bill that shuts down highway funding. Also a new CRomnibus is coming in September; same thing, either defund PP or shutdown the government. All of these measures have been articulated by Ted Cruz.
At least Trump states it honesty and clearly,
All the rest say they would never shut down the government, when at the same time some of the same are calling for it on TV and talk radio.
We were all supposed to claim the same, that we were all for a shutdown, but Cruz was against one, but we support him for shutting it down...???
Too complicated.
Incremental victories are still victories, and look at what the left has done incrementally over the last 60 years...
They can indeed. But they won’t. Because a) the GOPe leadership won’t bring it up and b) they don’t have 2/3 to override an Obama veto, so they’ll use that as an excuse. That’s why it has to be a shutdown-—which they already caved over.
I know Fiorina did. Cruz has called for it. Jindal did I believe. Rand Paul did not. Christie wouldn't.
They keep repeating this crap. How exactly did it hurt them? A negative editorial in the NYT? Truth is the Republicans and Democrats both are equally vested in the electorate not discovering we can live without them.
I’m for Walker?
I know. This is why people are sick of all politicians and want a non-pol running. I understand the point Cruz wanted to make, and thought it totally wrong, tactically, effectively, and symbolically. Attaching anything to any bill-—highway or otherwise-—smacks of “more inside Washington” stuff to voters.
“Republicans were badly hurt in 2013 by the government shutdown, which was triggered by an effort to defund ObamaCare.”
Yep....so badly hurt that they won both houses in 2014 (only to later squander that good will).
What happened in 2013 to show this? Does anyone know what the left means when they say the GOP was hurt by the partial shutdown?
