Windows 10 – Be VERY Careful!

Once again, Microsoft screwed the world with its Windows 10 feature called Wi-Fi Sense. This nasty feature has serious legal implications for it will automatically connect your personal Wi-Fi network to anyone in your e-mail list using HotMail, Skype, or Outlook, and even Facebook, making those friends questionable. If any such person comes within range of your home Wi-Fi, they could secretly access your system from hundreds of yards away.

The real problem with this is rather sinister. The government would no longer need a search warrant for your surrendered privacy; good luck finding a judge who will uphold the rights that exist only in your imagination.

“The market dominance of Microsoft and Apple OS’s is due more to decades of massive advertising than anything else.”

Not even close. Many businesses have tried to use Linux on the desktop and it never worked well. Lack of drivers, application support, technical complexity, crashes, and many negative aspects of Linux not experienced on Apple and Windows platforms caused Linux not to be adopted.

On the server side Linux has had decent adoption, but that is because while it works once configured, it takes a technical employee to configure it. However, the entire development ecosystem is lacking for Linux.

Microsoft made it big in the 1990’s by ensuring the entire ecosystem, including books and training, were present. Linux has not done that. Apple finally has caught on and is following in Microsoft’s foot steps. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t kept up with their own formula and their ecosystem is languishing terribly.

So far, I've gotten three service calls for NVIDIA/AMD video issues, one of which corrupted the user's drivers so bad he couldn't navigate the screen. A couple of others in Edge that hosed the users' legacy IE 11 settings, and one that just caused a PC to start blinking a blue screen at the 8.1 Start menu and wouldn't let the user access her tiles to even get to her desktop. And that was just a post-download issue what cropped up when it was applying Windows updates. I'm sure more fun and hidden Easter eggs from this 'gift' to the unwashed masses will manifest themselves. My advice is, wait until the first round of Win 10 service updates are ready before upgrading. I do not like what I've been seeing out there so far.

How did you do that, Mike? Just downloaded Windows10 today — do you know where I can locate the WiFi Sense feature?

So let’s cut to the chase: How can you disable and block Wi-Fi Sense?

There are a couple of things you’ll need to do. First, on your Windows 10 computer, open the PC’s Settings and then click Network and Internet followed by Wi-Fi. Under Manage Wi-Fi, disable all of Wi-Fi Sense’s features.

Next, you’ll have to protect your home Wi-Fi network and ensure that other users with Wi-Fi Sense cannot connect to it. In order to do this, you’ll have to rename your network’s SSID so that it ends with “_optout.” So, for example, if your network’s name right now is “MyISPstinkz,” you’ll have to rename it to “MyISPstinkz_optout.”

Hundreds of feet maybe. Most likely about a hundred feet.
