Jeb Bush is spending hours in sessions from Florida to Maine preparing policy answers for Thursdays first Republican debate but he is also being mindful to avert any display of disdain for the man he will stand beside, Donald J. Trump, who has infuriated Mr. Bush by criticizing Mexican immigrants. (Mr. Bush is married to one.)
Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin is crafting one-minute answers and 30-second rebuttals in case Mr. Trump or others continue attacking him as a flip-flopper on Common Core education standards and as a weak jobs creator, testing lines in mock debates with advisers playing Mr. Trump and other candidates.
Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Ben Carson are determined not to let the debate on Fox News become about Mr. Trump, practicing to steer the conversation to national security, entitlement reform and health care which might implicitly plant doubts about Mr. Trumps knowledge on those issues.
Carly Fiorina, who has been among the lower-tier Republican candidates in many polls, spoke with residents at a campaign event in Marshalltown, Iowa, last week.
These intensive preparations, described by advisers and friends of the top candidates, reflect the preoccupation that many Republican candidates have with Mr. Trump, whose taste for lacerating his rivals with provocative language has made him the most unpredictable force on a presidential debate stage in years. Mr. Trump has risen quickly to the top of several polls, challenging or erasing the long-held leads of Mr. Walker in Iowa and Mr. Bush in New Hampshire, and he enters the debates with far greater name recognition and personal wealth to draw on than the other candidates, who cannot afford to leave the debate in a diminished state.

Oh, is Jeb's wife an illegal? Must be because otherwise this would be a lie.
What part of “illegal” is so tough for an NYT writer to understand? Or say/write? Is the writer contending that Jeb Bush’s wife and illegal?
If these clowns were candidates who belonged there, they wouldn’t have to spend time learning what they believe in and how they’d respond to someone who questioned their agenda.
“If these clowns were candidates who belonged there, they wouldnt have to spend time learning what they believe in and how theyd respond to someone who questioned their agenda”
Bingo! If you don’t know what you think about things and you are not well informed on the issues then what are you doing running for President?
LOL, how can they “test” themselves against Trump when they have no idea what he is going to say next? They should be brushing up on what their vision is for America, and how they intend to solve these problems. No - they are practicing how to debate Trump. Priceless!
Mr. Trump must be laughing his ass off!
I’m sure he read this article.
Good grief, what a bunch of pansies.
Its too hard for even 2 writers to say. Why does it take 2 writers to write a simple article. Its not like to this is deep throat investigative journalism. NYT does this a lot. Maybe they think their articles look more serious when there are 2 authors...
LOL. What would happen if they spent all their time developing responses to Trump’s possible questions, then he walked on, said “it’s impossible for me to outline my policies in the limited time available here, so I’ve detailed them all in a book, which I offer to everyone, free of charge. I’ll be holding a town hall meeting later, so anyone who has questions can ask them”, then walked off? Would there be some chaos? Would it hurt him to do that? I think not.
LOL.
OH MY!
BOOM!
That’s such an interesting idea because I’m sure you’re well aware that his book gets released on the very day of the debate!
LOL!
The book release is what made me think of it. I believe Trump understands his enemy and human nature, that he is a master of the calculated risk, and that he has an excellent sense of humor. It’s what someone like that might do.......just for the fun of it.
You know who Romney used for his debate couch? That RINO wimp, big-time bore from Ohio, Senator Rob Portman...who couldn’t debate his way out of a paper bag.
I imagine Jeb’s got someone just like him helping hone his debating skills.
The NYT has again conflated “Mexican” with “illegal”. The fact is, MANY perfectly legal immigrants have been admitted from Mexico, AFTER they have gone through all the legal requirements and paid the necessary fees, and once here, have become exemplary citizens upon naturalization.
But there are actually several different classes of “immigrants” in the territory once known as “the United States of America”. The most desirable of these, the motivated and successful person in his or her own country, that WANTS to be here, and will strive mightily to add to the lustre and polish they already admire and wish to emulate. Then there is the person, relatively unsuccessful in the home country, and wishes to emigrate to escape limitations that cannot be overcome in the land of their nativity, but they too, come with an ambition to succeed and see a pathway here. Occasionally, for purposes of business or tourism, persons from another country, in perfectly good standing in their home country, will apply for and obtain a temporary permission to enter the country. Another category are persons actively being persecuted in their home country, and are fleeing, sometimes in fear for their very lives, as they have forfeited all property in the venue from which they have fled. These people do not go through any formal application process, and in fact, the sort of documentation that may be requested of them may simply be beyond their means to acquire or produce. These people are admitted for purposes of asylum, and not necessarily on any track, ever, to become citizens. These people are not “illegal”, but have been granted privilege to enter and stay for a period of time, with the expectation that when things do clear up in their land of origin, they may then return.
Then there is another category, who either will not or cannot obtain necessary documentation to cross the border, and in fact, may have mischief in mind they plan on exercising while in country. They are not, nor should they ever be considered as being in the same category as refugees who have a genuine reason to be flee the country of origin. They are, in a word, house-breakers and squatters, with no legal or moral justification for being here. And they exist ENTIRELY because nobody is watching the entry points, nor are they actively tracking the movements of those already here after entry, but without long-term authority to be here.
couch = coach
But “couch” applies as well.
