Donald Trump says as president he would ultimately give some illegal immigrants legal status and isn't ruling out a pathway to citizenship, CNN reports.
That sounds different than what he said during his June 16 announcement speech when critics say he insulted Mexicans.
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems," he said then. "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
Those who are not committing crimes could find legal status under a Trump administration, he told CNN's Dana Bash in comments aired Wednesday on CNN's "The Situation Room."
"It depends," Trump told Bash. "Look, it sound cold, and it sounds hard. Our country is going to hell. We have to have a system where people are legally in our country."
While Mexico makes it hard for immigrants to enter, Trump said, "With us they walk across, immediately they're members, call them members of our country. It's not right. "
One of Trump's GOP rivals, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, appeared immediately afterward, saying Trump's comments sound a lot like amnesty.

So much for Trump.
No, he didn’t say that those who “met our laws”, since by definition illegals didn’t. He did say work with them to expedite it so they could come back here and be legal.
The “laws are the laws” was his doublespeak spin after he just said he’d make illegals legal. Then somehow after doing that, and because the ones he’d legalize aren’t mass murderers or whatever, we’d somehow go about pretending that we were enforcing our laws.
He did the amnesty dance, in short.
Nothing matters; until the border is closed.
Huh?
You need to hear all his comments to get the picture....
I get your apposed to amnesty....most are...but we do have laws already that are not being enforced. Trump wants them to be so or did you miss that?
It appears you want them all to leave who are here illegally....how are you going to arrange that???? Let’s hear your plan.
E-verify and enforcement. It’s not hard.
This isn’t new. The only new part was when he said they had to leave then come back. He’s always been for permanent legal status for illegals who want to work.
Its all been a scam. He’s taking away from Cruz setting the stage for a leftest. Do not vote trump.
“Doesnt matter what liberal things he says, the only thing that matters is that he gets very angry at dopes in the establishment and the left. Flash not substance is dominating the 2016 primary.”
I’ve said it before - it’s Chris Christie all over again. He yelled at people we don’t like, and all of a sudden he’s the next great conservative hope. Trump goes off on Mexicans, and so many here fall over each other to line up behind him.
Well, if the media don’t like him he must be doing the right thing. That’s the kind of logic dominating this primary campaign, and it would be funny if the consequences weren’t so serious.
Just speaking and understanding English is not nearly enough to satisfy what the Founders intended when they wrote and adopted the US Constitution or what is needed for maintenance of purpose. At the time they, the Founders, were very much aware and concerned that the form of government being written might not be sustainable by people who had no knowledge of It’s content and uniqueness. I believe without ‘exemption’ as Sinatra once sang in a famous song that the US has been steered away from the Founder’s meanings and intentions for the US. As for me ,an overseas vet of WWII and brother killed on Okinawa, I go for the Founder’s work and especially not someone who with his enablers has a very questionable legitimacy as POTUSA.
“Being here illegally is not a crime.”
Unfortunately, there really is devil in the detail of the law, I’ll leave it at that, I was just reading this yesterday.
Won’t work...already tried.
No it hasn’t.
If this nation can’t get people to show Id for voting what makes you think e-Verify would even be considered....which they tried to and it failed passage.
So yes it did fail...they never got it off the floor.
Legal Workforce Act, H.R. 1147, re-submitted in March AGAIN....
So we might as well just roll over for the Amero Union.
Newt is a good comparison in terms of inexplicable freeper love for someone undeserving of it. The more I think about Newt, the less I like him.
All the love for Trump is more egregious though, Newt at least had a history as a Republican and more importantly, we have some GOOD candidates this time like Walker and Cruz. Newt supporters had the excuse of weak competition.
It’s not about rolling over...it’s about “enforcing” the immigration laws that we have.....and that has not been done in decades. Trump wants to do that and is a good place to start...along with kicking out the bad guys. Nobody has been doing that. Just ask any border control individual.
Trump is the master entertainer and king of the con-men.
He is good at it, he is fun and funny.
After this is over Trump wants to go back on TV, this compassionate stuff should be expected.
I don't dislike him, its those who jump from candidate to candidate as our our only (till the next one) ‘pure’ candidate attacking all others who I question, their sanity.
‘Trump is the only real conservative who we can trust because he is super rich and needs no $$$ from the bad guys. Only he can afford to be the next Reagan. Anyone critical of him is working for GOPe‘
Exactly. He has said he wants the bad illegals shipped out and to figure out a way to speed up the process for some to come back in. Like it or not, but this is probably the best process we are going to get at this point in the U.S. People can post on this website for days about getting rid of the illegals...but the fact is Trump is the ONLY one who actually seems to have a plan in mind. Thing is, the guy gets things done....
Would you rather listen to Rubio or Cruz make promises? What plan do they have? We all know Jeb isn’t going to do a darned thing.
I’m tired of the pundits harping about Trump. Like him or not, maybe he is the guy who will do something for this country.
I fear Cruz, Rubio and the rest of the pack will do nothing.
