Thank you very much, Maestro! Beethoven setting of Bobbie Burns text - does it get any better?
"Hige sceal þe heardra, heorte þe cenre / mod sceal þe mare, þe ure mægen lytlað." "Thought must be the harder, heart be the keener / mind must be the greater, as our might lessens."

THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
English BullsYou know the tune, but now you can read the lyrics. The term bullmaker is a polite euphemism for a word that has a long and honored history in our rich agricultural tradition, as Ronald Reagan once put it.

For the folk songs, Beethoven wrote the arrangements, not the tune or the words. It was a way to earn money. These settings are a lot of fun.

THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
The Kiss, Dear Maid, Thy Lip Has LeftThis is one of the rare settings of Byron that predate Schumann, and its a real heartbreaker. Lou must have loved working with this melody; it sounds a lot like Stephen Foster.
