For his part, Trump played down his own expectations for the debate during his interview with Lemon.
"I have to be myself Don. And if it's not good enough, that's OK. You know, I'll go onto other things, I'll ride into the sunset and do some more buildings and create some more jobs and that's OK," he said. "I'm doing this because I want to make America great again, and that's why I'm doing it."
Trump also suggested he doesn't have a debate coach because he's not convinced such an expert would actually help.
"I am what I am. I am what I am. I mean, a debate coach look, Romney had a debate coach and Obama had a debate coach. Frankly, I thought Obama was terrible but Romney got worse and worse every time there was a debate. And by the time they had the third debate, he was catastrophic," he said. "I dont know what happened to him."

I hope Trump takes a flamethrower into that debate.
I like this guy more every day.
If only McLame and Slick Willie and Romney had that attitude.
Trump shows a realistic side.
Trump doesn’t need this job. maybe that’s why he should get it. Unlike all the rest professional politicians that do need the job.
Did Trump say he would pick Trey Gowdy as AG?
Trump is correct in that he is what he is. But that doesn’t remove the fact
that a skilled person in another area could help provide some tips/keys to the
upcoming debates for him.
Trump is lowering expectations. Then he will drop the boom at the debate. All he has to do is just be himself. Cruz won’t attack him and I don’t think Mitt Walker has the tools to do it successfully. Trump and Cruz should dismantle Jebbie.
I hate to say it but Rubio will likely shine as he’s such a little suck up.
Foolish. I don’t think debating is one of his strong skills. He should get some help....at least practice at debating.
Haven’t heard him say it yet but he tweet that last night.
That's exactly what I thought.
He's a very smart guy. A lot smarter strategically than he let's on.
Trey Gowdy would make an incredible AG.
The heck with wasting time
Cruz and Trump should forget attacking the others
Go after Obama and Hillary the MSM and the direction the country is going
STAY on message
The Donald does not debate, he negotiates. And the other person had better have brought something to the table, or there can be no deal struck. Ever.
The Donald is not out to get nothing for something. Indeed, he expects a great deal for very little, but he is unafraid to raise the ante if it is something he really wants.
On that stage the night of August 6, there will be nine separate negotiations going on simultaneously, and The Donald will keep the ball in the air on every one of them.
It shall be a display of just awesome raw power on a test run for the real thing. Entitlement be damned.
Yeah, well, you don’t want to overload him at this point, but at least lay out for him certain topics NOT to get drawn into. Watch Cruz, who is a MASTER at staying on HIS topics and message points.
Who is his competition going to be at the debate?
Ted Cruz, who is on his side and likely to go easy on him.
Chris Christie, who would make Trump look calm and reasoned by comparison.
Rick Perry, who wrote the book on how to tank in a debate.
John Kasich, who is about as colorful as mayo on white bread.
Ben Carson, who is a true gentleman and does not have a mean bone in his body.
Scott Walker, who appears to want to keep his hands clean and is letting slime merchants employed by his campaign go after Trump.
Bobby Jindal, and will we ever get that hideous SOTU response out of our heads?
Marco Rubio, who if he ends up in an immigration tussle with Trump will go down like a flak-ridden Messerschmitt.
Rick Santorum, who had his head handed to him by a total lightweight like Bob Casey.
Jeb Bush, yeah, right, seriously?
I just don’t see where The Donald has a whole lot of competition.
Trump is reaching out to skilled people for help. I know that from local sources involved with campaigns.
He is so right about Romny’s slide in the 2012 debates. Started strong then folded like a cheap suit.
