An American dentist has been accused of killing a well-known lion named Cecil in Zimbabwe earlier this month, the chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force (WCTF) confirmed.
The Zimbabwe tourism authority named the man accused of killing Cecil as Walter Palmer, a Minnesota dentist and avid big-game hunter.
#WalterJamesPalmer was the man who killed #CecilTheLion. This was an #illegalhunt, the authority posted on Twitter.
The Associated Press reported that Zimbabwean conservationists had accused an American of paying $50,000 to kill the lion.
The American shot the lion with a bow and arrow."

Rodrigues told the Star that the 13-year-old lion, which was skinned and beheaded, was shot on a ranch after it was drawn out of the Hwange National Park.
The hunters used a spotlight and tied a dead animal to their vehicle to lure Cecil out, the WCTF statement said. It took them another 40 hours to find where the lion was and then they killed it with a rifle, Rodrigues said.
A lot of people have seen this lion. He was magnificent. People came to Zimbabwe to see this animal and now hes not here anymore, and its a pity.
Rodrigues said Cecil was being studied by Oxford University researchers, and its tracking collar was recovered alongside its carcass. They tried to destroy the collar but failed because it was found, the WCTF said.

I am shocked--shocked!--that somebody went trophy hunting in Africa! What an outrage!
Piers Morgan is running a Twitter feed on the issue that might interest some of the posters here.
Hunting big game in Africa is one thing, killing a lion is completely unnecessary and stupid. Kill some Antelope or something if you must kill something for your ego.
I hunt legally.
I don't see the sport in hunting some animals..Elephants, lions, hippo's, Rhino's.......( Although..I'd maybe hunt RINOS..hehehe.)
I live here in America...and I've hunted ducks, rabbits, squirrels, geese, pheasant, quail. Don't do much of that anymore....just deer, and turkey. I want to hunt elk someday...
I've planted food plots...so I've baited deer...I guess.
I've tracked a wounded deer for a day and a half...and that is VERY ethical. Lot's of hunter's won't do that.
Do I support this guy...Absolutely not.
FWIW-
He was a protected lion, hence the collar. This wasn’t a legitimate safari. It was a crime by any standard.
Hunting these other animals have their place. It’s done to keep the numbers down and to keep them healthy.

When I was young and just a bad little kid
My momma noticed funny things I did
Like shootin’ puppies with a B B gun
I’d poison guppies, and when I was done
I’d find a pussy cat and bash its head
That’s when my momma said
(What did she say?)
She said “My boy, I think someday
You’ll find a way to make your natural tendencies pay”
You’ll be a dentist
(Be a dentist)
You have a talent for causing things pain
(Pain)
Son, be a dentist
(Son, be a dentist)
People will pay you to be inhumane
(Inhumane)
Your temperament’s wrong for the priesthood
And teaching would suit you still less
Son, be a dentist you’ll be a success

Everything about this story is scummy and despicable.
I don’t think what this guy did can legitimately be called hunting.
You would have fit in just fine in ancient Rome.
Puleez, this guy was an dumbass for sure with more money than sense and very poor judgement without a doubt but death by being fed to lions, really? I don’t think so. Isn’t that what Saddam & his sons use to do to people during their reign in Iraq?
True story. One of my cousins in Minnesota is a dentist. When we were teenagers he would show off the animals he had killed and mounted himself.
This explains why dentists keep stuffing cotton into your mouth when you already have too much.....
Ha ha—maybe they’re drawn to all the blood in their profession?
Would you and your cousins’ family have immigrated here from Transylvania, by chance?
My sister did email yesterday about a bat that her cat was chasing around in the house around 1:30am.
I asked her if she now has to have the curtains drawn during the day...
It's not only a leftist smear, it's misandristic.
Oh Free Republic, what hath this one dead lion wrought?
Such outrage, such cries and lamentations!
He’s a dirtbag. He’ll be worldwide notorious for sure.
Meanwhile ,hardly anyone knows who Kermit Gosnell is.
The gun isn't the issue.Neither is hunting. The *lion* is the issue. If this clown was hunting bucks in Minnesota,Manitoba or elsewhere this wouldn't be an issue to me.Not at all.
It's the *lion*!
Considering the fact that the people of Zimbabwe have been driven to the brink of starvation by the actions of their idiot ruler, its a little surprising the lion hasn’t been killed and eaten before now.
As it is, Zimbabweans have a history of raiding wildlife preserves of neighboring countries to feed themselves.
Same dick dentist has also killed leopards and a white rhino with his bow and arrow.
I don’t know if I count corn plots or salt licks as baiting or not. If you eat the resulting meat, it’s a bit like farming.
I commend you for tracking for a day and a half. According to the article I read, this guy wanted to get close enough to finish with his bow but after 40 hours or so it got tedious and they used a rifle.
They had the rifle, enabling a longer shot, and put the lion through Hell to extend the hunt. Not at all the same. He also didn’t care enough to observe the animal he was killing, resulting in signing the death warrant for almost two dozen cubs. More than 20 animals will die because this guy didn’t spend a day to find the number two male in the pride.
I hunt with my husband (deer, antelope, and soon, bear). I hunted deer and squirrel with my dad as a girl. Except for potentially killing animals that damage crops or threaten our existence, I wouldn’t kill another living thing if we didn’t plan to eat it.
