A man armed with an assault rifle opened fire at a crowded park in Desire Sunday (July 26), shooting at least four people, including a man left critically wounded, New Orleans police said.
The attack came around 6:20 p.m., when Edith Sampson Playground Park at the corner of Piety and Treasure streets was crowded with family gatherings and several children were playing inside two inflatable "space walkers," witnesses said.
"I was scared for my life," said one woman, who asked that her name be withheld for fear of retaliation. "All those children was out there. I just got down and was saying, 'Everybody lay on the ground!' It was sad."
One man, described as about 28 to 30 years old, was gravely wounded in the attack, suffering multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and side, police said. He was transported by New Orleans EMS ambulance to Interim LSU Hospital in critical condition, NOPD spokesman Officer Frank Robertson said.
"He was covered in so much blood, I honestly couldn't even see the entry wounds," said one man who came to his aid until rescuers arrived. "He lost a lot of blood. And he's not a large fella."
The man, who also declined to give his name, said the victim was "gagging for air" as blood from his wounds appeared to flow into his lungs. Police did not have an immediate update on the wounded man's condition.
Another man and two women also suffered gunshot wounds, but were transported to Tulane Medical Center in private vehicles. Police said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The older of the two women, who is believed to be in her mid-50s, was shot in the arm, according to the woman who asked that her name be withheld.

Actually it's surprising anybody reported it.
.. or worse
I'm being "ironic" or "sarcastic" but the others shoot and kill daily in this country and it never makes the national news to the extent that one white nut job creep can make in one incident...
amazing....
then again, maybe we all are racist and we live in a racist country, since nobody seems to really care about what happens in Detroit,Chicago, Baltimore, Norleans etc...
All of the urban areas which you mentioned plus many more urban areas across the country are controlled by dims.
Would you expect them to admit that their policies have failed? ;-)
If this happening along with the other stories of crimes committed by minorities then there would be an uproar from the dims about ‘The-media-is-racist!’.....or.....’Everyone-is-racist-except-the-poor-minorities!’
Racism or not, people tend to be drawn to their own kind. I happen to think that it is nothing more than human nature.
How long ago was "back then"? I remember this part of the city as a "no-go zone" because of the Desire Housing Projects, part of which survive as the nearby Abundance Square apartments. In the '70s and '80s, the problems caused by that public housing extended well past Almonaster Avenue.
“How long ago was “back then”?”
1940s. He had rented that store shortly after WWII ended. The Desire Street Projects had not yet been built. By my teenage years there was a black movie theater that was built across the Florida Avenue Canal in the Desire Street Projects. There was always trouble at that theater!
In the early 50s he moved the grocery store to Independence and Rocheblave which was one block from the Florida Avenue Projects and about four blocks from the Lone Star Cement Company and Chase Bag Company.
The Florida Avenue Projects were housing only white people at the time. Any problems were rare. In fact, as a child I do not remember there being any violence/gun problems in that neighborhood. I actually had friends who lived in the Florida Avenue Projects. By and large, they were pretty decent people.....simply poor.
I would not go into any of those neighborhoods today in broad daylight with a police escort! ;-)
