Feces explosion in Mexican cilantro fields sparks partial import ban

There’s more than just cilantro in the growing fields in Mexico, and that’s caused the Food and Drug Administration to institute a partial import ban on it through August.

The move comes after health officials found human feces and toilet paper in growing fields, which have been linked to hundreds of intestinal illnesses dating back to 2012.

The FDA will focus on product coming from Puebla, and all of it will need to be manually inspected and certified before being allowed into the U.S. Cilantro from other parts of the country will need to have documentation proving it did not come from Puebla.

In the report, the FDA outlines a number of different sources for the contamination after 11 farms and packing houses were inspected by both U.S. and Mexican officials.

Conditions observed at multiple such firms in the state of Puebla included human feces and toilet paper found in growing fields and around facilities; inadequately maintained and supplied toilet and hand washing facilities (no soap, no toilet paper, no running water, no paper towels) or a complete lack of toilet and hand washing facilities; food-contact surfaces (such as plastic crates used to transport cilantro or tables where cilantro was cut and bundled) visibly dirty and not washed; and water used for purposes such as washing cilantro vulnerable to contamination from sewage/septic systems.

Both Yum! Brands, which owns Taco Bell, and Chipotle told Bloomberg they don’t expect their cilantro supply to be impacted by the ban.

The plant is called Cilantro, used for its leaves. It’s seeds are called coriander and have a much stronger flavor.

So, they taste even more like dish detergent...................

Clearly we are more evolved than those who can not detect the aromatic chemicals that others find pleasant..

You know.......once you get past the feces explosion.

I make no comment as to who is more or less "evolved". Some things are an acquired taste such as Pollo En Molé. Being that I was born and raised down here on the Texas/Mexican border, I've been eating these kinds of foods all my life and I like it.
However, I am very well aware that certain of our "local foods" are an acquired taste as I have said.
Take Pollo en Molé For example. I grew up eating it and I love it. All of my relatives from up north absolutely hate it. It is an acquired taste.
As to the cilantro, I didn't know so many people hated cilantro until I started reading this thread. Down here where I live everybody eats it. Always have and probably always will I guess. This thread has been an education for me.

As to the feces explosion problem. Well that doesn't bother me since I grow my own coriander.

I also add Cabbage, Corn on the Cob and 1 Jalapeno (Optional). You can put any veggie you desire does not need to have exactly like I do. Those are my favorite veggies for my soup that is why. LOL

For a side dish is Rice, I make Mexican Rice to go along with it on the side too.

I love soup. Make it all winter. Mostly vegetable beef. Also though chicken. So I’ll try this too. I’ll copy it into my recipes. Thanks again.

That is a very small group. Anywhere from 1 out of 25 to 1 out of 7.

I sure hope there is some tangible benefit to being in that group, i’m one of them.
