It's time for someone on TV to step up and take Donald Trump down or, at least, put him in his place.
The situation has not risen to the level of Edward R. Murrow and Sen. Joseph McCarthy. But it's definitely in a league with Katie Couric and Sarah Palin.
And every day that Trump gets away with driving the vast majority of political coverage on network and cable TV with his reckless, tabloid-style attacks and unsubstantiated claims is another day that the nation loses having an informed discussion about where it wants to go in terms of leadership after Barack Obama.
Coarsening the conversation of democracy hardly starts to describe a candidate for president collectively characterizing Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers, or questioning the war record of Sen. John McCain, who spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
Compared to those ignorant and ugly acts, Trump calling South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham a "stiff" while giving out his cellphone number seems like mere high school bully-boy stuff. But is this really the tabloid, reality-TV level at which we want our most important civic pageant to play?
Trump drags almost every part of the presidential selection process down to his level. Graham, one of the most thoughtful and civil national leaders I have ever encountered, responded to Trump by calling him a "jackass" and appearing in a video that featured him destroying his cellphone with everything from a meat cleaver to a golf club.
It was kind of pathetic, but what else could Graham do? Trump laughs in the face of civility. He's like McCarthy in that respect.
Two big-name, prime-time TV interviewers had a shot at Trump last week: Bill O'Reilly of Fox News and Anderson Cooper of CNN.

Notice how the author says that Graham called Trump a jackass IN RESPONSE to Trump giving out his phone number.
Smell the fear......
It’s wonderful.
Why does a journalist believe it is up to them to take someone down? They should just be reporting facts.
As I have said before, Trump is that pig you were warned not to wrestle.;-)
You will get dirty...and he loves it.
Lol, Lindsey Graham. Just no. Talk about a non serious bid for the nomination, Graham is right up their with Pataki as having no chance whatsoever.
The Baltimore Sun can’t even do a decent job of making Baltimore City a Socialist Paradise, much less fixing the country.
This is starting to sound like John Kerry, who served in Vietnam. It will soon be so trite that it sounds like a putdown or a half truth.

Yes, that is interesting.
There is a blogger who analyzed Sen.Graham’s actions and came to the conclusion that it was a setup.
Photographs of Lindsey Graham destroying his cell phone were shot in the morning hours before he referred to Trump as a “jackass”. It was a setup to elicit a response from D.J.Trump.
Better put some ice on it.
Truth to a Leftist is like a Crucifix to a vampire.
What the heck does she mean by that, if anything?
I would love to see Donald Trump take on Candy Crowley!
Because that’s what they do - take people down. They don’t report the news - they think it’s their job to make the news for the rest of us. This author just admitted the mission of the MSM.
There is simply no TV “journalist” of sufficient stature to adequately carry on a probing interview with The Donald. If there is one thing The Donald is at least as good as his propensity of making the deal, it is with cutting through all the BS and getting right to the gist of the matter. His time is way too valuable to suffer needling and stinging slighting remarks for more than a few microseconds.
Never ask permission, never apologize, never beg for forgiveness later.
The Big Dawgs are out.
The reason that the Rats are so scared of Trump, is that Trump is the one candidate that can steal a number of votes from “Low Information” Voters.
That’s not a knock on Don, it’s just that he has that charisma that can appeal to those kinds of voters that none of the Republican candidates could ever hope to match. And the sad fact is that in today’s America, you have to get at least some of the Low Information Vote to win elections.
