Firebrand Republican senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Friday rushed across a line rarely crossed on the Senate floor: He called the leader of his party, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a liar.
"What we just saw today was an absolute demonstration that not only what he told every Republican senator, but what he told the press over and over and over again, was a simple lie," Cruz said Friday morning. "We know now that when the majority leader looks us in the eyes and makes an explicit commitment, that he is willing to say things that he knows are false. That has consequences for how this body operates."
Prompting Cruz's outburst: McConnell's move to set up amendment votes on a must-pass transportation bill. After senators voted to consider the bill, McConnell (R-Ky.) set up votes on two controversial measures -- a repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and a reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States -- and did it in such a way that will make it difficult for other amendments to be considered.
That move incensed Cruz -- who, like many conservatives, strongly opposes the bank's reauthorization, though it enjoys support from a supermajority of his Senate colleagues. While McConnell has personally spoken against Ex-Im reauthorization, Democrats said in June he had agreed to schedule an Ex-Im vote in order to get highly divisive trade legislation passed.
But McConnell at the time denied that any deal had been made, and Cruz said the same assurance was given in a private Republican conference meeting.
"Like Saint Peter, he repeated it three times," Cruz said Friday.

Cruz for President. And Trump would be a hard hitting Secty of State.
Woah woah woah....
A) I don’t think Ted Cruz really has anything to do with whatever Trump is spewing forth.
B) Trump’s statement seems to be giving Democrats credit, in that they wouldn’t have made mistakes or done the “evils” that the Republicans....er...Bush and his administration, did.
and C) The fact that Trump continues the other candidates of the same party he’s running with and ignore the left, makes me very uneasy about his intentions here. I haven’t heard him talk about Hillary, Sanders or any of the other Democrat candidates and that their policies are, and would be, a continuation of these same “mistakes” and “lots of other things” that are causing our economy to crash, today.
And what’s with this “lots of other things”? I, for one, am bothered that he generalizes with his statements...he doesn’t go into detail or provide specifics. I find that bothersome.
But Trumps a progressive, so go figure.
The people have brought rope???
Wow! Let ‘em have it, Ted!
Truth to Power. Go Ted!!!
I love Ted.I just wish he would spend more time on talking about what he will do as President instead of being a Senator.
“Ted Cruz is either free of any dirt that can be used against him or hes stupid.”
Well, he isn’t stupid, and if there was anything in his background that could be found, it would already be out there. I doubt anyone could be perfect, taking absolutely no action that couldn’t be questioned years later.
I absolve myself of this problem, of course, since I have been and am, perfect. :o)
Cruz is the only one who can put the football in the end zone. Trump may serve to be a lead blocker, but he will never be POTUS.
Thank you.
I guess it's easy to forget Ted was like this long before the new shiny toy came along.
From Cruzs book......
On leadership corruption and sellout......
That Tuesday lunch began with our leadership saying, Were asking every Republican senator here, to affirmatively consent to lower the threshold for Harry Reid to take up the debt ceiling, from 60 votes to 50 votes. And we were told, everyone of you should agree for two reasons.
Number one, if we do this, it will happen, and hallelujah, hallelujah, thats what we want. We want trillions more in debt with no spending reforms, because were scared of this issue. We dont want to have a political fight on this.
But number two, if we do this, the Democrats will have the votes to do it on their own, which means all of us Republicans can vote no. And we can go home and tell our constituents, we opposed the thing we just consented to allow happen.
Now, I was sitting there to be honest, I hadnt gone to lunch intending to pick a fight, but as I listened to that, I was astonished and I raised my hand, and I said, Theres no universe in which I can consent to doing that. I spent two years campaigning across Texas, telling Texas, if you elect me, Ill fight with every breath in my body to stop the out of control spending and debt that are bankrupting our kids and grandkids.
If were to do that, I think it would be both dishonest and unfaithful to the men and women who elected me.
Don’t write off Cruz. He’s likely to get a majority of Texas’ 144 delegates in the “SEC Primary.” And likely to pick up more still in Arkansas and Oklahoma. That means he’s probably in 2nd place, at worst, in the delegate count after that primary. Then it’s on to Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi before the winner-take-all contests start.
If Walker wins Michigan, Walker will be on Bush’s heels, with Cruz on his. If Cruz wins Michigan, Cruz will be the one nearly neck-and-neck with Bush. Either way, it will be at least a three man race (with Trump being in the top four, if he’s willing to spend his own money to stay in.)
I did a simulation of the primaries (I’ll post an article on the results), presuming Bush does very strong in the early contests, and Cruz DOESN’T catch on and DOESN’T capitalize on a big delegate haul from Texas to be the Bush alternative, but rather Walker emerges as the primary Bush alternative.
In this scenario, Walker gets 559 elected delegates, Bush gets 682, Trump gets 309, Cruz gets 306, Perry gets 64 (mostly leftovers from Texas), and Rubio, Paul, and Carson get 63 combined before dropping out. With Trump-Cruz (combined) and Walker both getting nearly as many delegates as Bush, the superdelegates will make the call. I’m guessing they’ll go for Walker, but if they split and Trump won’t back down, he could end up being a kingmaker for Cruz. And this is if Cruz DOESN’T do very well.
If Cruz becomes the alternative Bush, look out.
Even in this scenario, Bush takes all in Florida, takes nearly all in Virginia, wins in New Hampshire and dominates in South Carolina, Ohio and Illinois, and runs a strong third in Texas. The only way he could do much better would be to win in Arizona or Michigan. (Michigan is winner-takes-most, but has a disproportionally small delegation.)
If Cruz steals Georgia or Michigan from Walker, or takes a state I expect Bush to wins, he can win the primaries outright.
You are correct, the politics of it doesn't help Jeb Bush. I count that as a plus, as I'm sure most of us do as well.
The astonishing part is that anyone thought Jeb Bush would ever be a "thing."
Well....there are many FReepers who disagree with your assessment of Ted’s chances.
So, committee assignments are not on his list of concerns.
Kentucky shouldve dumped the POS.
___
He should have lost the primary and I believe he would have if Rand Paul hadn’t betrayed the tea partiers by supporting McConnell. McConnell is a liar and a scumbag. I’m ashamed that he’s from my state.
I’m praying for ‘clean.’ Unless I’m severely disappointed, I will vote for him.
Yes. And it is especially annoying when the 'new shiny toy' had this to say about Mitch just last September ...
Donald Trump Endorses Mitch McConnell for the Wrong Job [9-2014]
“He has zero chance at the GOP Presidential Nomination,”
Perhaps you are not familiar with Cruz. You say he has zero chance at the nomination - that’s what they said in Texas when he ran for US Senator against the millionaire Lt. Governor of Texas. He won by a fairly large majority.
I will consider President Cruz the 44th or perhaps 43rd POTUS, depending on whether you count Grover Cleveland twice. I have never counted the usurper on that list, and I don't plan to start even once whatever is left of America is free of that petty tyrant.
Cruz and the Trumpster have been meeting over the past few months. Is there a meld ticket coming??
Just read the Introduction in his book
The Rinos already have it in for him He might as well go ful blast
