(CBS SF) The fault that produced a 4.0-magnitude earthquake in Fremont early Tuesday morning is expected to produce a major earthquake any day now and Bay Area residents should be prepared, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist said.
The 2:41 a.m. earthquake on the border of Fremont and Union City occurred on the Hayward Fault at a depth of 5 miles. The epicenter was at a spot just north of the intersection of Niles Canyon Road and Mission Boulevard.
The quake caused some BART delays early today while work crews checked the tracks, but appears to have caused no major damage. At least 13 smaller quakes or aftershocks have been reported near the same location as of 6:42 a.m., the largest of which was a 2.7-magnitude at 2:56 a.m.

Oakland and Berkley could be destroyed. That’s a shame.
I hope the guy is not just crying wolf. IIRC, Japan gave a very short warning for a quake recently.
“Oakland and Berkley could be destroyed. Thats a shame.”
Oh yeah, a complete disaster
Don’t remember hearing on mainstream media so many near term warnings of dire events??
Usually have to go to a conspiracy site for this kind of news

California might actually have a chance of going Republican in 2016
Terrifying.
I would hate living in an earthquake prone area——I have a real fear of them.
,
I spent the morning laughing at the Freemont residents on the news, all google-eyed about a 4 point earthquake. Now this news. Gulp! Maybe I will buy that wind-up transistor radio after all.
Perhaps Governor Brown should pass a law forbidding earthquakes.
I was wrong. They apparently have a early warning system set up which has been in use for years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_Early_Warning_%28Japan%29
A new ice age is overdue too.
They’re caused by global warming, don’tcha know....
Has the ability to predict earthquakes really advanced this far?
That would only make the underground troglodytes even angrier.
I remember, when I was in middle school, teachers telling us a “big one” in CA, could completely separate CA from the mainland.
I am not an seismic expert at all. I am an civil engineer. However, I wonder.....
..the Pacific plate encircles the entire Pacific Ocean. In the past 5 years or so, major earthquates have occurred in Peru, New Zealand and Japan. The area that has been relatively ‘quiet’ is the west coast of North America. Have the other major quakes placed added pressure on the west coast and is waiting to “release”? From my limited experience point of view, it is very plausible that California is due for something large.
For those who believe, look up “Shemitah.”
I lived in Berkeley literally right on top of the Hayward Fault for 3 years.
But where will I get my crack and birkenstocks?
Yep, gonna happen in September.
