Although Donald Trump is trying to re-invent himself as a conservative for a possible bid for president in 2012, reminders of his prior support for Democrats and big government polices keep adding up. The latest: The Donald supported the auto bailout in 2008.
I think the government should stand behind them 100 percent, Trump told Fox News Neil Cavuto nearly three years ago. You cannot lose the auto companies. Theyre great. They make wonderful products.
Faced with crushing debts caused by poor management and high labor costs, GM and Chrysler requested federal assistance to keep the firms afloat, and were granted a $25 billion loan in the fall of 2008. President George Bush then secured more than $17 billion for the companies.
This occurred months before the birth of the Tea Party, but conservatives were outraged.
Not Trump. A longtime advocate of sweetheart deals between corporation and state, the real-estate developer went all in for the deal.
[Y]ou have to try and save the companies, Trump said in a separate 2008 Fox News interview. And I think you can easily save the companies.
The Club for Growth, a free-market advocacy group that opposed the bailouts, blasted out a statement Wednesday knocking Trump for his support for bailouts over bankruptcy, and cited that the real-estate mogul had succesfully filed for bankruptcy himself four times in the past 20 years.
If theres anyone who should know the value of filing for bankruptcy, its Donald Trump. He should have known that the $13.4 billion government bailout of the auto industry just put off the inevitable while putting taxpayers at risk, said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. Bailouts and nationalizing whole industries can cripple free markets and has hampered our economic recovery. We need our next President to understand that economic freedom leads to growth and prosperity for all, and that the government should never be in the business of picking winners and losers.
Feels Like Socialism
But I Like It: Trump[Donald Trump]
Not many perfect candidates out there. I don't know about re-invent himself, but he is a action guy....his 'action' involves .gov, like many other candidates.
yep, because you’re an economic liberal populist.
Figures......
We need to repost this...as often as possible
Oh i know...sold their soul, dropped their panties, given over the car keys, the house keys and the credit cards, and were baptized in kool aid just for good measure. They'll all look very foolish at some point, which will be when they take a six month hiatus from FR.
You however probably voted for Bush.
Do you know what hypocrisy means?
You amuse me. :)
I enjoy tracking and removing trolls and people who's demeanor is quite non-conducive to this forum's intent.
I *HAVE* noted a marked slowdown in your aggressively-combative postings, unnecessary vitriolic responses, and excessive mockery since your return at noon.
I'd be satisfied with either your self-moderation, or your removal. Either works for me. :)
Not bailing them out would have increased the unemployment rolls which would increase the debt and government power over our lives.
Some of you have your mouths open hoping a unicorn will spit his Skittles into it.
You aren’t getting perfection in Election 2016. You’re getting Cruz doing a good college try with all minorities, gays, and libs thinking they hate him. Ending with someone like Jeb. Versus Hillary or another lib Dem. The whole thing, sans Trump, will be controlled by the liberal PC Media.
Or, Trump could non PC truth into this whole Kabuki dance. If he brings Cruz aboard, it’s the fastest way to get Cruz into the WH at all.
THAT IS THE CHOICE.
Anyone picking at how non-conservative Trump is, is complaining that their Rec Cross Emergency water doesn’t come with a lime slice.
At least the left now realizes that they failed a selling Americans funding to stop global warming. Now mini “ice age” faux scientists are bring back the 1975-76 ice age scam. See? All is not lost!
Hey, this whole thing became surreal two presidents ago. Now we’re just witnessing a circus, not unlike the circuses in the Roman Empire just before their collapse. We need to adopt a party atmosphere like the guy in the movie Armageddon who had a great seat picked out.
“But I think we should be raising import tariffs so bail-outs arent necessary.”
Raising taxes is an odd position for a conservative to take.
in the short term, maybe....but not in the long term. It is still liberalism, but you are a short term liberal economics type thinker......
And besides, the bail out money was mostly a union bribe, but I don’t expect you to figure that out.
We should be getting rid of stupid stuff like CAFE standards also. Let the American companies build what people want to buy.
Trump driving the Republican poo-bahs and the media bonkers. It is a joy to watch.
I am in complete agreement with you.
Don’t ask them the tough questions, though...
Yes, I did vote for Bush. I would vote for him again over Kerry and Gore anyday.
Did you not?
Go, Trump, GO!! Trump them RINOs!! Make ‘em cry!!
Cruz’n to the White House.
Jim Rob has spoken! Great to know I’m in good company.
Labor will join in the Trump movement. Walker will have zero labor support. Reagan had huge labor support.
