So when you say “nobody likes McCain” in reality you mean nobody in your interest group likes McCain.

If Trump (or any other Republican) is serious about winning anything, he needs a lot of people that vote for McCain and others like him.
Of course, this outrage is entirely manufactured by the GOPe. If you listen to what Trump actually said it was a minor gaff that he immediately corrected. GOPe is lying and those jumping on Trump are liars and they know it. But lying is just part of politics today, sadly.
