MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -
A teen is dead after being shot by a Memphis police officer late Friday night.
The MPD officer stopped a car for a broken headlight in the 5700 block of Winchester Road. The officer issued the driver a ticket and let him go. However, the passenger in the car had several warrants for his arrest.
Darrius Stewart, the 19-year-old passenger, was placed in the back seat of the police car to verify the warrants.
Investigators said when the officer opened the back door to handcuff Stewart, he kicked the door and attacked the officer. During the fight, Stewart grabbed the officer’s handcuffs and swung them at him. The officer grabbed his gun and shot Stewart to end the fight.
Stewart went to Regional Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.
officer had several cuts and bruises from the fight, but he did not need to go to the hospital. He is relieved of duty pending the outcome of this investigation.
"Words can't express how I feel," Stewart's mother said. "If my son attacked this officer, why didn't he use a taser? There were two officers and only one of my son."

The funny thing here was that “Mr. Stewart” didn’t have anything to say about his son’s death. Probably because he didn’t know he had a son. and his name isn’t Stewart.

I guess you’ve never been to Memphis. For such a beautiful city, it has a $hit black population.
In Texas at least, to ask for ID does not require probable cause. TX law requires everyone over 17 to have some type of ID. Also, all passengers in a car can be questioned as a result of the traffic infraction since all of them are technically ‘temporarily detained’. Usually the passengers are questioned based on the behavior, attitude, or stories of the driver and/or passengers, but the identity of the passengers can also be confirmed as part of officer safety protocols.
We got all the way past 30 posts before someone used the Amish reference. Let’s just stick with “teens” and “youths” and leave the Amish people out of it.
Is the headline writer TRYING to incite riots? Now all we will hear about is another “unarmed” black killed for no reason rather than being killed for attacking an officer.

That's another question. There can be more than one. Certainly there's no justification for attacking the officer. However that wouldn't justify using deadly force if it wasn't warranted.

Taser is not the appropriate response to someone swinging handcuffs at you. The hinged arm when unlocked can be used as puncturing device.

If you were a fugitive from the law and the police couldn’t ask for ID from the passenger, would you be driver or passenger?
On a traffic stop, all persons in the vehicle are considered detained.
No you are right and I am a police officer. If I could retire today and stand outside of police academies exhorting young folks not to be police officers, I would.
The Ferguson Effect is having its consequences with police leaving the field in droves.
