A time for truth: Donald Trump is not a good politician. Right now, his popularity is due to his positions, and his media-hungry "Breath of Fresh Air" populist approach, not his skill as a politician.
As examples, Bill Clinton had horrible policies, especially as a national leader or a moral human being. But, with all those limitations, he was the best RETAIL politician of the last 50 years.
Reagan was great too, but he had the policies and morals to back them up. Clinton was a failure and moral reprobate, but still got elected. "Retail Politician" Gold Medal goes to Clinton on "degree of difficulty" (like in Olympic High Diving competitions.)
That said, The Donald's recent foray into flaming napalm re: John McCain was both unnecessary, and unwise. It had no upside.
In response to an urgent 3:00 AM call from his closest advisers, (which didn't even happen in a dream...) I have sent him the following.
I'm sure it will soon be behind him in the smallest room in his house.
Memo:
To: The Donald FR: CPE DT: Jul 19, 2015 RE: Dont hand ammunition to the media/enemy
#1: Re; your McCain comment: Never make a public comment that does not bring you benefit.
#2: Every public comment will be approved by some, disliked by others. Work to increase the % of the former, decrease % of the latter. Never play for a tie, or worse, a loss. You are smart enough to know which is which before you speak.
#3. In todays electronic age, every comment is public. Just ask Romney, Jesse Jackson (Wre going to cut the nuts....) or even fumduck Obama (Please tell Vladimir...)
#4; Just because its true, you dont have to say it. Just because John McCain is not a great War Hero for his time spent in captivity, the truth of the comment did not make the comment beneficial to you.
#5: When you attack personally, you give those attacked the ability to respond personally. If McCain now said, Does Trumps combover hide a hole in his head where all the brains flowed out no one would blame him. Yesterday such a comment by McCain would have been thought of as petty. Today, it would be a fair shot. Keep your comments about opponents to their policies, actions, demonstrable failures, not the people themselves.... (and why make the small fry like John McCain an opponent?) Youll have enough real, meaningful enemies. Why add to them?
Praise a person and their actions. Criticize only their actions.
#6; Never forget Rule #1 Every national election is decided by the 8-12 % middle of the roaders. Right or wrong, they like McCain. Whether they agree with his policies or not. the 8-12 % swing voters think he at least is a nice guy. Why take that shot when there was no gain in it for you?
Great advice for a status quo campaign.
Status quo campaigns are why we keep losing.
No, politicians have to be elected. And to do that, you need the middle of the road 8-12%
Remember the Dems for Nixon, Dems for Reagan, Dems for Bush
Rs are a 21st Century minority party. We never get elected without Dem votes.
..................................................
You very conveniently fail to mention the great number of Republicans who stayed home and didn’t vote because they considered McCain and Romney to be simply Democrat-Light. Two losses by your “perfect politicians.’ You’ll get a third one if you run Bush or Rubio.
Trump and Cruz are fresh and unsullied for the most part. Voters are listening and that makes the Establishment NERVOUS! You are part of that Establishment.
Best part of Trump is he is not a professional politician. The author credits a lying, sniveling piece of human trash, with a side practice of sexual predation, as a “great politician.” You kiddin. Clinton was elected by a corrupt, lying, old media monopoly that had nothing to do with Bill’s talent for lying and cheating—they covered for this bum and promoted him.
Who the heck wants a politician?! They are the bane of our existence!
Trump may not care if he goes all the way. He obviously loves this country and wants certain conversations to take place. He is forcing those conversations. We are all p.c. fatigued. What a refreshing change.
He knows we have several stellar potential candidates. If he can get them talking about the subjects he wants aired he might be satisfied with that.
He takes no prisoners and is certainly going to muddy up some folks who deserve it.
I see no downside. Go get ‘em, Donald.
Thank you.
You’ll need to find someone else to argue with, I hope that you can live with that.
I’m not arguing with you. I’m pointing out that your claim is BS.
I’ll give you one example:
The anonymous piece: “A war hero doesnt get 28 medals awarded all after-the-fact for bravery for no other reason than being shot down and captured and then go on a celebrity public relations tour because hes the son of two acclaimed Navy admirals.”
That is what is called BS
McCain’s awards:
Silver Star (awarded for actions as a POW)
2 Legions of Merit, 1 w/ “V” (one awarded during a POW and one on retirement from the Navy - not bravery awards)
Distinguished Flying Cross (for combat flying)
2 Air Medals (these are not bravery awards, but for combat flying)
3 Bronze Stars with at least one V device
The rest are non combat, peacetime awards, or service medals. These are not bravery awards
So two bravery awards, not 28, and only one while flying combat.
The problem is not that the differences aren’t there between the two pieces, they are and they are glaring. The problem is with you, you can’t recognize the differences.
Good bye.
That is one thing not "most things." It's also the least relevant thing in the post.
I thought you weren't going to argue with me?
I think that McAmnesty deserves what he’s getting from Trump. Nobody else has ever been willing to go there with McAmnesty and maybe that “maverick” jackass will STFU
Took me a second to get the message from the three pictures...and then I understood. Well played...LOL!!!
It says jar donkey pit.
McCain called the Republican base crazies, so yes there is an upside in backing you base.
the Conservative base decides elections. If enough of us stay home the Republican looses
“Which is why he’s so popular—A large number of voters are very tired of professional politicians. “
I know I am.

The very sad fact that way too few here admit.
