Donald Trump on Sunday stuck to his guns after igniting criticism over the weekend when he questioned Arizona Senator John McCain's status as war hero, and said the Republicans attacking him are irked by his recent polling success.
"What happened is, later on, the Republican candidates, some of whom are registering 1 percent and zero, and theyre very upset that Im leading the polls by actually a nice margin," Trump said on ABC's This Week. "Theyre extremely upset."
Trump has been at or near the top of several national polls recently, including a Fox News Poll out last week, which had Trump leading among Republicans with 18 percent.

Trump's ABC appearance came one day after he ignited a firestorm of criticism after he said at the Iowa Family Leadership Summit that McCain, a former Navy pilot who was held for more than five years in Vietnam after his plane was shot down in 1967, qualifies as a war hero only "because he was captured."
Most of the Republican presidential candidates and the Republican National Committee swiftly condemned the comments, with the notable exception of Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. So did press magnate Rupert Murdoch, whose Fox News network will be hosting the first presidential debate next month and will be deciding which of the 16 major Republican candidates get the coveted 10 seats on the stage.
A number of leading Democrats also spoke out against Trump, including the party's presidential front-runner, Hillary Clinton, and Secretary of State John Kerry.

McCain started it by calling Trumps supporters “crazies”. That’s his favorite term for patriotic conservatives.
McCain should apologize for calling American citizens who care about secure borders ‘the crazies’..
What was to be gained by McCain calling us crazies?
Actually they ended student deferments when they switched to the lottery system. I was a 19 year old student and drew a high number also.
+1
So very proud to say that i have not watched FOX News in about 4 years.....Outrage of the day channel.

When is he up for reelection again?
McCain has remained in office all these years because of his pro defense stand, Lindsay Graham the same. It is hard for conservatives to turn down somebody who has been in the military or who takes a strong pro-military stand. Politicians like McCain and Graham know that they can exploit peoples’ patriotism. Other faux conservatives exploit social issues like being pro-family. Then there are those who emphasize the economic issues such as taxation. Many of these pro-military, pro-family, and lower tax faux conservatives have fooled us for years because they know which buttons to push. We have been played by some very crafty politicians over the years. We have to remember to look out for the wolves in sheep’s clothing. There are MANY of them in politics.
McCain is a double crossing fraud. It is pretty safe to say this today but only a few years ago many people would have come to his defense because he was a senior Senator and a war hero. Now we know that he has many flaws that make him not suitable to be in the Senate. Trump was right to rip the mask of faux respectability off of McCain’s face but he did not choose his words well.
I am pro-life, anti gay agenda, pro strong but wise defense, for small government, jobs for Americans first, well protected borders, no amnesty and cutting way back on immigration especially not making our own children a minority in the future. No one should be asked to put their grand children on a sacrificial altar for some multi-cultural utopian fantasy.
What we want from our candidates is the WHOLE PACKAGE, not just being okay on some issues. Most of the Republican candidates since George W. Bush were for big immigration, open borders, jobs going overseas or foreign labor being imported here to take jobs away from Americans. Most of them sang the praises of *free trade*, Since the 1970’s or 1980’s we have been told that *free trade* was good. That it was good that many jobs were going to China, Mexico or other places. They kept saying trust us, in the end there will be more jobs because of open borders and free trade. Well, thirty or forty years after these promises what are the results? About 1/3 of American factories have shut down, many jobs that were left are being taken over by foreign labor included highly skilled IT workers who are being replaced by cheap foreign labor.
We have been lied to for forty years and they still continue to lie to us. It is an insult. Back around 2006 they told us that there were eleven million illegals in the United States, they are still saying that there are eleven million illegals in this country. They really do think that we are brain dead.
I love this quote from Jesus Christ: “Be as wise as serpents, be as harmless as doves.” Being a good person doesn’t mean that you have to be a fool.
McCain called the Republican base crazies and Trump defended the base, that’s what he gets.
Student deferments ended in Sept. 1971 . Trump graduated in 1968 which means he could have gone for his Masters and got another deferment . BTW , I was 19 in 1971 . My number was 140 . Fortunately for me the highest number they took was 95 .
I don’t know who invented the term *rino* but he sure deserves a nice cozy spot in heaven. :^)
“What is to be gained from trashing McCain?”
Hopefully, a CONSERVATIVE Senator from Arizona to replace the RINO. If enough Arizona voters learn the truth about him by Trump’s bombastic (and truthful) speech, then maybe they’ll get rid of him. Another conservative senator can only help us.
Pushback against GOPe
Trump can mortally wound them
They have been calling us crazies for years along with—anti-immigrant, racists, nativists, anti-Hispanic and bigots. This is what they really think of the American people when we dare to put our interests first.
The truth needs to be exposed before he runs again.
It frees up the opposition from having to go negative, as the facts will be readily available as of now.
Maybe nothing, but I surely don’t like the choices of AZ voters.
I graduated HS in 1974. They still had the supplemental draft list going by birthdate. Mine was #8 but the war was all winded down by then—otherwise I would have been drafted.
Hadn’t thought about that. I like it. But Im thinking she’s gonna get her two youngest grown before she steps back in a ring. She may accept Department of Interior. And work from here two homes. Lol
He didn't trash McCain. McCain tried to trash him and those who like his stand on immigration and a bunch of crazies. Trump responded honestly and way more respectfully than McCain deserves when asked about McCain "being a war hero".
As far as the benefits of trashing McCain - the Truth benefits....he really is a vile person and an insane abettor of the other side and the terrorists more than he is a proponent for our Veterans.
