AUSTIN Gov. Greg Abbott says he is reluctantly asking Texas Military Forces to arm soldiers at their home bases after Thursdays attacks at military sites in Tennessee that killed four Marines and one sailor.
Abbott said in a release Saturday that he will authorize Adjutant General John Nichols of the Texas National Guard to arm National Guard personnel at military facilities across Texas. Abbotts move followed shootings on two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn.
It is with a heavy heart that I issue this order, he said.
The Republican governor said the Chattanooga events made clear that our military personnel must have the ability to defend themselves against these type of attacks on our own soil.

Why “reluctantly”?
They are being targeted.
The enemy is broadcasting that they are being targeted.
So why any reluctance? People need to grow a spine.
Texas ping
Reluctantly my ass.
I’ll bet he was glad of the opportunity.
Why “reluctantly”?
Typical politician, trying not to offend the lilly-livered.
GREG, You should not be doing this reluctantly or with a heavy heart. You should be ENTHUSIASTICALLY, CHEERFULLY, WILLFULLY, RESOLVEDLY arming your NG personnel, with the express purpose of simultaneously protecting them from Islamist looney-tunes on jihadist missions and poking a finger in the eye of our control freak mafia federal government.
My $0.02.
My heart would not be ‘heavy’. On the contrary, it would be lifted and renewed, frankly.
it is better that the state of Texas does it.
Two more days and those heathen outlaw motorcycle spawn of the devil members, would have started doing it.
That’s the Dallas Morning News interpreting “with a heavy heart.” It’s not what he actually said.
I doubt he's really "reluctant"
He's "playing politics" and throwing "crumbs" to the bleeding heart liberals.
JMHO
I think his “heavy heart” has to do with the deaths of five people who were unable to defend themselves rather than issuing such an order.
I am hoping he was playing to the crowd with that statement but I’m damn glad this man has balls.
Thats how I see that comment as well.
Republicans need to stop throwing breadcrumbs to liberals and start throwing them to Conservatives.
"It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that the state of Texas
finds itself in profound and fundamental opposition with the policies
and practices of the United States Government. We therefor find it
necessary to sever upon this date our long standing... etc.
Why with a “heavy heart?”
Didn’t we learn anything from Temple, FGS!
Yes why reluctantly? The entire American populace can carry but the warriors can’t. What’s wrong with that picture?
Damn straight he’s not “reluctant”-but he is polite, unlike liberals-he already showed that he has titanium cojones as AG, and that isn’t likely to change...
I fully agree with you.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that the state of Texas
finds itself in profound and fundamental opposition with the policies
and practices of the United States Government.”
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt too, as that statement sure sounds like he’s regretting not being on the same page as the Fed, which should be seen as a good thing, under this current regime.
