Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett stepped into the national debate over symbols of the Confederacy on Friday, saying that he has ordered a 102-year-old bronze statue of a Confederate soldier removed from the lawn next to Rockvilles Red Brick Courthouse.
Leggett (D) had been staying out of a community discussion over the Montgomery County Confederate Monument, sparked by the movement to remove the Rebel battle flag from South Carolinas state capitol grounds.
Last week, he said he wanted to hear various points of view on the statue, and the Rockville City Council is scheduled to hold a hearing Monday evening. In addition, County Council President George L. Leventhal (D-At Large) has asked his staff to put together a private meeting of stakeholders without elected officials present so they could freely exchange views.
But on Friday, Leggett, who was the first African American to serve on the Montgomery County Council and be elected county executive, sounded adamant.
I decided were going to remove it, period, he said, adding that he has David Dise, director of the countys General Services Department, to develop a plan for moving and storing the monument, which was commissioned by the Daughters of the Confederacy.

the wrong side won in 1865
let’s not make that mistake again
While he’s at it, he should order the removal of the Democrat party (and all its members), since it was the Party of Slavery at its founding two centuries ago and remains the Party of Slavery today.

I want Rats out of Md. yesterday.
Hilarious, Monkey county, and so true.
What none of these PC idiots want to know or acknowledge:
1). Maryland was a HUGE slave state and port of entry for the trade coming from Boston shippers. Boston, MA shippers of.... slaves.
2.) Many many wealthy Northern military leaders and even common foot soldiers owned... slaves. They were fighting to keep the Union, no matter what. It wasn’t all Southern slave owners. The trade began and expanded right into and out of the Boston harbor, and Philadelphia.
The next line of this “symbolism” removal, will surely be removal of the current US flag, since it flew over all of these time periods and political realities.
The new Statists want to re-write history, to forward their agenda of a state that controls us all.
Leggett is an old Democrat, meaning he hates southerners, defended Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WVA), hates conservatives, wants to rewrite history a la Stalin, and should have been in jail decades ago for the corruption in Montgomery County.
Also, I’ve been told he’s a nice guy. SO WHAT?
Its a safe bet that demand for removal of all Confederate symbols is coming from a central authority.
This is absolutely pathetic. These statues are to honor the war dead, of both sides. You will find some sort of statue in virtually every town in New England, and I am assuming it is the same in the South.
Nobody associates the Confederacy with today’s modern Democratic Party.
“The next line of this symbolism removal, will surely be removal of the current US flag, since it flew over all of these time periods and political realities.

Reading this story, this pisses me off more than almost anything I have read recently except the latest Planned Parenthood scandal. These monuments are all over the North and South. They are memorials to the young men of the town who fought and died in the Civil War. This is pretty much desecration, as far as I am concerned.
I say this as someone who for a time lived in a small town in New England and saw a very similar statue sitting on the green, decorated with small American flags. I thought that was very special. How would you feel if someone rooted that up? Or how about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in D.C. Those in the South are just as entitled to show respect for their ancestors who died in the Civil War and those in the North.
You said “The next line of this “symbolism” removal, will surely be removal of the current US flag, since it flew over all of these time periods and political realities.”
Mr. John S. Mosby, you are exactly correct. I fear that is what this whole ridiculous campaign is all about.
I am so surprised and fearful of how many citizens of this great USA are so fast to fall. Wondering how and why.
The Dude has nothing on ISIS.
Leggett can byte me.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Another dumbass Democrat from Montgomery County.
Rulin’ by decree just like his sidekick Obammy.
There’s a lot of irony in Maryland politics because in the good old days the rural counties outside Baltimore that included Montgomery and Prince Georges etc. etc. without any suburban growth were Democrat back then, too.
They were good old boy Boss Hogg Democrat instead of liberal socialist Democrat.
The Republicans ran well in these areas when the suburbs began to spring up with the GOP striking a liberal tone in the 1950’s and 60’s to contrast with the good old boy Dems.
Governor Spiro Agnew, elected in 1966, was a true blue Nelson Rockefeller Republican who ended up being Nixon’s running mate in 1968. As VP, Agnew was sent out to make conservative speeches attacking the media so Nixon could suck in conservatives while he made government bigger and cut deals with Communists.
Agnew was a one man “Fox News” in his day......
Then he began singing 'Maryland my Maryland' - he knew more about the history of my state than I did.
