I have walked by that statue many times. I guess Mr. Leggett doesn't know that the "despot" referred to in "Maryland My Maryland" is Abraham Lincoln and that there were probably more Maryland units fighting for the Confederacy than for the Union.

But don't let a little thing like historical accuracy get in the way of your agenda to dumb down the coming generation, Ike.

I was in east Germany shortly after the wall came down, about 1991. I went to visit the church where Luther hid for several years. In the parking lot, a German man picked me out as American and asked me where I was from - "Maryland" I said.

Then he began singing 'Maryland my Maryland' - he knew more about the history of my state than I did.
