RIVERSIDE A Riverside restaurant is holding a contest to rename its "squaw" bread after a customer refused to use the name, saying it is offensive.
Backstreet Restaurant owner Keith Holloway tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/1HYpPJI ) that a woman pointed to the dark brown, molasses-sweetened bread on the chalk menu board when ordering a few weeks ago. When asked why she wouldn't say the name, she said it was a slur.
Holloway promptly covered the name with a scrap of paper, temporarily renaming it brown bread. He is taking nominations for a new moniker through the end of the month.
