House votes to ban Confederate flags at federal cemeteries [and in federal gift shops]

After just two minutes of floor debate late Tuesday evening, the House passed a measure to prohibit the display of Confederate flags on graves in federal cemeteries.

Despite the lack of fanfare, the vote marked the House's first entry into the debate over removing the Confederate flag from federal property that went beyond codifying already established policies.

Rep. Jared Huffman's (D-Calif.) amendment to the 2016 Interior Department spending bill seeks to end a policy that allows a temporary display of the flag in cemeteries under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. It sailed through on a voice vote after minimal discussion on the House floor that encountered no opposition.

National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis issued a directive in 2010 that allows national cemeteries which commemorate a designated Confederate Memorial Day to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans with small Confederate flags. The directive states that decorative flags must be removed "as soon as possible" once the Confederate Memorial Day is over.

"We can honor that history without celebrating the Confederate flag and all of the dreadful things that it symbolizes," Huffman said.

Confederate Soldiers – American Veterans by Act of Congress

” Every soldier’s grave made during our unfortunate civil war [sic] is a tribute to American valor… And the time has now come… when in the spirit of fraternity we should share in the care of the graves of the Confederate soldiers… and if it needed further justification it is found in the gallant loyalty to the Union and the flag so conspicuously shown in the year just passed by the sons and grandsons of those heroic dead.”

…President William McKinley, 14 December 1898.

Confederate soldiers were and are counted among all honored American war dead.

I’m compelled to post this again after another Freeper referred to people from the south as a bunch of in-breeds.

Re-post:

True story.

I was more or less raised by my (paternal) grandparents. Both born in the 1880’s, both college educated and very involved with the local school (they built/owned rental property for out of town teachers to rent during the school year).

That said, I was around a lot of people (active and retired) in the teaching profession. I once had a retired (elderly) college professor tell me (I must have been 8 or so - year must have been around 1966) there would surely come a time when white males from the south would be the most hated people in America.

True story.

I guess Southerners will have to “hoist the Bonnie Blue Flag” instead. The imbeciles in congress won’t even know what it is.

Correct, voice vote means no roll call. The chair decides that the measure passed based on not hearing a substantial number of nays. If there were some nays, any member could object to the passage and request a recorded vote. Obviously there was a tacit agreement to let it pass.

IIRC Lincoln had the band play “Dixie” at the end of the war. He was all about reconciliation.

Today we’re all about continuing the narrative about black oppression —because it’s the only identity that African-Americans can cling to — they were ‘oppressed’.

There is nothing else that binds them together; and if they lose that, they wouldn’t know who they are...

So we have first the mania about the “N” word; then the “noose” mania; and now the “Confederate flag” mania.

All to emphasize the narrative.

And none of that has actually bettered the condition of black people at all; it has only permitted our culture to perpetuate a myth.

and some wag said Reconstruction lasted only a few months.Indeed the House members who voted for this would have Never agreed to what President ford did honorably —when he recognized General Lee.After years of da Yankees claiming he could not be an American citizen.

Gosh, I just don’t get it. We knew the DC crowd had no integrity, but now they’re exhibiting a lack of brains. If the soldier died under the Confederate flag, the Confederate flag should be the one that memorializes his service.

WHY THE REGIME PICKED ON THE CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG
AND NOT ROOF’S MANIFESTO

Because it was under threat of questioning and possible impeachment proceedings by its so called political opposition the regime needed to defer or stop any movement toward this. It was necessary to use a political device usually atrributed to Saul Alinsky but used by the nazi and commie’s like Stalin with the “Kulacks” through racial division. It created persons engaged in felonious assults on authority who were black youths into; “Victims of an evil society” (thus approving their actions) out of whole cloth.

The regime began with the Zimmerman case which resulted in a series of assults by black youths on completely innocent whites,”hispanics”, and asians who were either targeted or wandered near or through black gang infested areas. The perpetators excuse; The reported “cold blood killing of Treyvon Martin because he was black”

It led to a score or more deaths and serious injuries which were treated as local news ignored and forgotten. And it was met with silence while this was happening. Neither the locqatious POTUS or his political opposition uttered as much as a “Now!,Now! or a “tsk!,tsk!”.

Those killings were referenced by the Charleston Church massacre perpetrator in his crazed manifesto.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3302529/posts

Naturally when it was discovered that mention of those score of murders were used in this nut cases’s “manifesto” the reaction was....“Well we can’t let that out. Oh ! His face book has him holding a Confederate battle flag, (Which to many is simply an ensign of protest and rebellion), that must be his excuse

“The Confederates made him do this horrible act ! Let’s get them !” Well they’re doing a good job of perverting what that battle flag’s used for at the same time ignoring the regimes complicity in engendering those previous racial incidents.

Thank the Freepers who helped empower this with their demands we elect ‘lesser evil’. Next, Christian crosses will be removed.

I can’t understand why so many are upset in discovering that principle matters and that actions have consequences.
