Manuela Carmena, the new left-wing mayor of Madrid, is set to get rid of all street signs bearing references to the late dictator Francisco Franco, replacing them with the names of illustrious women and local heroes.
The plan is the latest in a long list of changes made by the citys new mayor - a former communist judge who ran with left-wing coalition Ahora Madrid - during her first few weeks in the position.
Madrid City Hall announced a "participatory" plan in which neighbourhoods will vote for who they want their streets named after.
According to Spanish daily 20 minutos, Carmena is keen to exchange Francoist street names for those of illustrious women, such as novelist Emilia Pardo Bazán and iconic Republican leader Dolores Ibárruri, known as La Pasionaria.
Another idea is to allow residents of each neighbourhood to vote for which of the areas illustrious residents they would like to see immortalized on street signs.
Over 150 streets, squares and public spaces in Madrid still bear names that commemorate or celebrate the 1936 military coup, the Spanish Civil War and its protagonists, according to a City Hall spokesman.
The City Hall has said their aim is to comply completely with Spains Historical Memory Law, which was passed in 2007 and included an official condemnation of the Franco regime as well as the removal of Francoist symbols from public buildings and spaces. . .

I take it the latest news is that Franco is still dead ... and now he’s the equivalent of the confederate flag.
How very....Orwellian...of him.
Why stop there?
Undo the Reconquista and bring back Muslim rule of Spain.
Franco saved that ungrateful nation from 40 years of commie oppression.
bzzzzt! There’s no such thing as a “former communist”.
Looks like Spain needs another Franco, sometimes I think we need one too.
Franco > Anyone currently running any European country
Commies... heh. They all want to erase history.
All the PIIGS are electing Commies. These countries have a death wish, because their “benefactors” the Northern Europeans, are going to cut off the “sand between the toes” bunch around the Mediterranean and between no money and the “refugees from ISIS” “boating in from the South,” they are not going to have time to come up for air!
Francisco Franco is still dead!

Franco thought he had beat the communists... but they’re back.
So is Chevy Chase's career.
True, but he had a few funny movies before they went south. And stayed there.
I was in the radio news business back in the 70s when Franco was hanging on to life seemingly forever. You don’t know how much that media-driven death watch pained me. It’s no wonder the whole thing became a parody and fodder for comedy.
If it bleeds it leads... no decency there.
I know they are ungrateful, but what’s a Spaniard for otherwise?
