I graduated from SU in 1985. Route 81 separates University hill from the African American part of town. The highway acts as a dividing line. The worst problems happened at the nursing school, because their dorm(90% women) was right next to the highway. Even 30 years back you had to have a resident of that dorm come down to the first floor to sign you in if you were visiting. Assaults and rapes were a problem back then.
Syracuse is an old manufacturing city where many of the well paying jobs have moved overseas. The SU campus dominates the southeastern corner of the city. Southwest corner was no go area. Northwest was very industrial. Northeast was blue collar.
