Federal government is currently crafting a mandate that would require all new vehicles to talk to each other continuously. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to submit their proposed connected car rule by the end of this year.
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology has been developed by top automakers over the past decade and is ready for commercialization. It uses a combination of Wi-Fi, GPS data, and sensor data collected by the vehicle to transmit a signal on speed and position 10 times a second.
Like so many technologies, V2V is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it has great potential to reduce car crashes, which claim 37,000 lives a year in the U.S. It also means that your driving data will be broadcast openly, making it easy for interested parties to intercept this information.
V2V ups privacy concerns because it essentially broadcasts a vehicles location and speed, as well as some information about where a vehicle has been previously, to anyone within range. And while Department of Transportation officials told the GAO that V2V communication security system would contain multiple technical, physical, and organizational controls to minimize privacy risksincluding the risk of vehicle tracking by individuals and government or commercial entities, regulating who can use V2V data and for what would fall outside the Department of Transportations span of control. It would essentially require legislation by Congress.
Considering the mass surveillance being carried out by the National Security Agency and other agencies, it is highly unlikely that authorities would ignore this potent source of information. Local governments could use the data to track those they consider bad actors.
No.
“What could possibly go wrong?”
Isn’t it supposed to be: What could possibly go worng?
Yep! CDC probably getting ready to mandate that all penises must talk to each other and be speed and location traceable.
Ok, so for the first time I’m glad Sen Paul is in the race.
This sounds like the kind of issue where him having a larger platform could be beneficial.
What could possibly go wrong?
Your Social Security Number wont be used for identification.
Randy Barnett translates: "But to justify a revolution, it was not thought to be enough that officials of the government of England, the Parliament, or even the King himself had violated the rights of the people. No government is perfect; all governments violate rights. This was well known."
"So the Americans had to allege more than mere violations of rights. They had to allege nothing short of a criminal conspiracy to violate their rights systematically. Hence the Declarations famous reference to a long train of abuses and usurpations and the list that followed."
I'm thinking we got a us a criminal conspiracy by the gruberment at all levels to violate our Rights systematically.
But they are violating our rights for our own good.
The despots have only the best of intentions.
Its for the children!
My next one might be a relatively very low cost, small, homebuilt roadster including homebuilt roll chassis (little experience there from my youth). Haven’t decided, yet, whether it will be front mid-engine or rear mid-engine. Leaning toward rear mid-engine, because increasingly more donor vehicles have front-engine, front wheel drive (works for a rear mid-engine build).
Will likely do a laminated job with carbon fiber as the surface layer for the body and subdued finish (lighter, less radar signature). There are quite a few open source collaborations including plans for building such vehicles (for those who can do mechanics, fab with metals and composites or at least learn much).
And there is nothing in the Constitution which gives the feds this authority!
If this is Vehicle-to-Vehicle only, then this isn’t so bad. Essentially the cars within 300 feet of you all talking with each other and keeping track of speed and direction.
Big step up in safety.
But this does NOT need to transmit to a government server anywhere.
My car has a carburetor and mechanical fuel pump also..
The owner will pay in the added cost of the car and maintenance. Car dealers will be forbidden to disable them. Within 2 years police cars and roadside receivers will be able to read and store the data.
Government agencies will store the information at a huge cost, giving them an excuse to raise taxes.
Remember when they gave us reflective plates? They said they would save lives. Lo and behold, a few years later, all police cars scan all plates and store the information.
Trust your government?
Mileage taxand so on.
I’m currently on the hunt for a hot Flathead. The guy who built the car did a nice chop and channel job, but he put in a small block with auto tranny. It’s a good engine, but an automatic in a street rod? No way!
There are two totally separate issues being talked about here. The least number of comments are regarding the Technology. The technology is a good thing.
The problem is who has the power to used the data generated by this Technology and has two aspects. First, that we no longer TRUST the Government which would have access to the data generated by the Technology. Secondly, that our Government no longer has any desire or will to control or limit evil wrong-doers (as opposed to “non-compliant” individuals who insist on, say, driving at 75mph on a deserted, dry Interstate which our benevolent Government has designated as a 55mph Limit section because it is a “mountain county”.
Instead, Government is primarily concerned with CONTROL of ordinary people going about their everyday lives.
“Where is your Permit?”
“Have you completed the Environmental Impact Evaluation?”
“Have you offended a privileged minority?”
“How much did you make last year? Send it in!”
The Technology could be great in reducing traffic accidents, in allowing for self driving cars and for “flight following” for loved ones on a trip. The fly in the ointment is that Government cannot be trusted. And the Technology will facilitate criminals who will continue to go unpunished.
All they have to do is make it illegal to drive a car that is not equipped with this function.
An imperial edict that I half expect most any time.
Every aircraft will "talk" to every other aircraft, giving position data, altitude, etc. - plus the aircraft owner's name and personal information.
Every aircraft that intends to use air traffic control services (towers, flight following, etc.) must have one on board by 2020.
"Oh, look. John Smith is out on a flight..."
Screw that. I'll fly into uncontrolled fields only.
