How about we demand the return of Cuba as a US territory under the terms of the Spanish American war?
Does the US own the land, or is it a long term lease? I thought it was a lease, but am not certain.
Obama's never met a commie he didn't like. Since day ONE (of his pResidency)I thought the reason Obama's been against Gitmo was to give it back to Castro in the first place.
I believe it is leased because I read a story where Castro never cashed any of the checks and keeps them in a pile.
From comment #30. Unreal, besides Gitmo and the end of US TV and radio broadcasts, Cuba wants compensation, money and stuff, for the economic damage caused by US policies, I guess for almost 60 years.
It's insane that such discussions are even taking place. And Obama looks like a fool once more, offering everything up front and then the tyrants he's negotiating with up the demands and ask for the sun and the moon.
That is my thoughts, they did not make any demands that they were told by the white hut to demand. Giving the, camp gitmo cant be "our" idea, it has to be a "compromise" made to start relations.
Obama will see that those property owners are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Not to be mean, but what’s to stop 0 from giving Gitmo away? The dictator can do anything he pleases.
BO will cave? Guess who TOLD CUBA TO SAY THIS? BO!!!!! 0dungheap is fast-tracking relations with Cuba in order to facilitate giving Guantanamo BACK to Cuba before he leaves office. THAT IS THE ONLY REASON ODUNGHEAP RESUMED RELATIONS WITH CUBA!
Nice going, Bammy. You dumbass
Such broadcasts are omnidirectional and can't be misdiverted..........
Cuba controls the airwaves by controlling the receiving units in the hands of its citizens.........
In other words, no Dish, no Cable........For those fortunate enough to be able to afford a flat screen TV, all they get are state controlled broadcasts............
Cuba is being quite reasonable.
Barry is letting Iran have nuclear warheads. All Cuba is demanding is a strategic U.S. Naval base and media censorship.
Gitmo would be considered a treaty like the Panama Canal giveaway. It would require a 2/3rds approval of the U.S. Senate. At least least it would have back in the days when rules meant something.
"I eat breakfast 300 yards from 4000 Cubans who are trained to kill me, You think I'm gonna let some commie punk tell me to hand the keys over and walk away"?
I think we own it outright.
NOTHING owned by evil white men is TRULY theirs according to the “Won” way of thinking.
In 1903, the new Republic of Cuba leased to the U.S. the Naval Reservation on which the Naval station is now located. The lease was negotiated to implement the Platt Amendmentwhich passed Congress in March 1901 and was added to the Cuban constitution in May 1902.
Article VII of the Platt Amendment and the appendix to the Cuban constitution require the United States to help maintain the independence of Cuba and the Cuban government to sell or lease to the United States the lands necessary for coaling or naval stations.
The 1903 lease, signed by President Theodore Roosevelt on Feb. 23, 1903, required us to pay Cuba annual rent of $2,000 a year in gold. The original lease was later abrogated and modified by the Treaty of 1934 between the U.S. and Cuba, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, on May 29, 1934.
The new lease incorporated by reference the 1903 lease termsexcept the annual lease payment increased to $4,085and further stated that So long as the United States of America shall not abandon the said naval station of Guantanamo or the two governments shall not agree to a modification of its present limits, the station shall continue to have the territorial area that it has now.
When the communists took over Cuba in 1959, they cashed the check for $4,085, but they have refused to cash subsequent checks.
My counter offer would be that we establish a permanent base for a Marine division on Castro’s luxurious private island.
I would hope it would take an act of congress to abandon the base.
