A culture capable of self-government must be steeped in an education that recognizes the objective existence of truth, beauty, and virtue. A classical charter school offers precisely this type of education by making use of the great ideas that have informed Western Civilization for thousands of years.
In order to establish and perpetuate this type of education I am seeking interested individuals in the Elkhart, Indiana area who would participate in founding a classical charter school. A few initial contacts have been made already. A meeting date has also been established.

Those who work on a project like this should expect to expend a great deal of effort, and should join with the expectation were are dealing with unchanging principles that must not depart from the overall mission of a classical education: to develop informed human beings who know what it means to enjoy the blessings of liberty as our forefathers understood and defined those blessings.
If a family chooses home schooling predominantly as a way to escape the public school milieu of non-judgmental experimentation, a classical charter school is a great way to introduce them to sound discipline. The ideal is for father and mother to teach and raise their children at home, but this is difficult when one or both must leave home daily to “bring home the bacon.” The classical charter school is a way to bring western ideals to bear on the general population so that we may live in a relatively free and prosperous land. It is very important that our children understand clear definitions of liberty, because liberty does not mean doing whatever comes to the mind of the individual. There is discipline involved. I think you are far away from Elkhart, Indiana, but I would encourage you to follow this thread, and consider in your area whether *you* could be a part of setting up a school such as this. Don’t short sell the wisdom you have received from Above.
Indeed, the involvement of government will be a significant challenge. There is a point at which the “tune” they call will be contrary to our mission, at which time they will be met with reasoned and clear practices to the contrary. We are Americans. There are ways to get this done with persistence, patience, ingenuity, hard work, and so forth.

I will join you in hoping and praying that your Granddaughter is given to receive the benefits of a classical education. I was short-changed in that respect, so am undertaking to help others receive what I have not.
Fester, contact Hillsdale and tell them you want a classical academy. They have been assisting locals set these schools up all over the country. Best wishes, and my prayers go out to you, as well.
stead of a government school, make it a non-approved private school, and essentially homeschool the kids. Keeps the government out and no lines to toe.

Thank you. Yes. I just returned from a seminar at Hillsdale on this very subject and hope to make use of their model. At this point it is a matter of identifying people around me who can serve as founding board members.
Private schools enjoy more latitude in many respects, but they are 1.) inclined toward high tuition rates, 2.) come across as open only to the wealthy, and 3.) do not meet the enemy on its own turf. Besides, the whole idea of public schools is to create a well-informed citizenry, which is precisely what the classical school curriculum does without becoming sectarian in nature.

All this is true in theory but in practice there is too high a regulatory price tag. You wont get what you think you will get, and the illusion of independence is not independence. The blob will not let it survive. Go private and let the parents be involved in it
Go private. A very successful, award winning classical public charter school in my state is now saddled with Common Core.
If a classical charter school ends up with Common Core, it is because the board, principal, and teachers have departed from their mission. The distinction between classical and “other” must be maintained at all costs. Will check out your link. Thank you!
They may eventually go nationwide, so if you don't want to go it alone you could ask about their plans (if any) for your locale.
To be honest, I’m more worried about the Supreme Court upholding Obamacare’s financing scheme and Congress passing that horrible trade bill. Those will affect far more people than the gay marriage ruling.
Thank you for the link! AZ has been particularly amenable to classical charter schools. This does not go without notice. Founders Academy has also succeeded well, with at least 4 schools set up and functional within the past few years.
