The Atlantic speculated Facebook is using it to monitor how views spread
But Facebook has denied using it to collect user data on behavior
The site has previously come under fire for altered the news feeds of almost 700,000 users in a huge psychological data experiment
Your Facebook feed is probably looking a little more colourful this week.
In celebration of the Supreme Court's approval of same-sex marriage, the site is offering users a tool to overlay their profile photos with a rainbow filter.
More than 26 million people changed their profile pictures using Facebook's rainbow filter to show their support for the LGBTQ community since the tool launched on Friday.
But while it may seem like Facebook's intentions are noble, some reports claim the social network may be carrying out another psychological test on its users.
The reports were sparked by a throwaway comment by MIT network scientist Cesar Hidalgo on Facebook.
He joked: 'This is probably a Facebook experiment!'
'The question is, how long will it take for people to change their profile pictures back to normal.'
This led Atlantic to speculate that by setting up its own tool to let people filter their profile picture, Facebook could gain unprecedented insight into how to influence people.
Facebook, however, immediately denied the claims.
A spokesperson for the site told DailyMail.com: 'This was not an experiment or test, but rather something that enables people to show their support of the LGBTQ community on Facebook.
'The point of this tool is not to get information about people.'
But, as a report in the Atlantic out, the site has long been involved in research to better see how information spreads in a social network.

I mistakenly decided to go ahead and watch PBS’ FRONTLINE last night about Trans-Gender children. I have never in all my life seen such a horrifying nightmare world. The future is not a Marxist one, it’s just plain madness.
Liberal Moms and all their brilliance completely placating their infants gender whims. Encouraging their children to live out whatever momentary gender curiosity their second-grader thought at the moment.
There were only two Fathers on the show. Both clearly against what was happening to their boy or girl. Just completely bulldozed by the wife and the “professionals” they took the children to see.
Middle-School kids taking puberty blockers and hormones, completely annihilating their bodies before they’ve even discovered what they are attracted to sexually. Complicit butchery from the medical establishment. A budding industry of Medical staffers and Homosexual Psychologists creating life long Cosmetic Surgery Drag outfits these poor children will never escape.
No one, ever telling them that it is IMPOSSIBLE to actually transform your gender in any measurable way. Just modern Californians gluing beards on their daughters and taping boobs on their boys.
The most nightmarishly sick society to have ever existed in all of human history.

I challenged a “friend” who posted the rainbow WH pic...told her that it was an act of a petulant child wanting to be king and a slap in the face to every American who held either an ambivalent or opposing view of the despicable decision by SCROTUS.
She apologized.
I email and I text...only friends. My name and face is not out there in public for all to see. I realize this isn’t 100% secure, but what goes out and what comes in makes it about as secure as one can get

Not only did it identify supporters, it identified people who did not “choose” the rainbow, so they can be targeted by supporters.
What’s been so funny to see is how MANY of my liberal friends have changed their profile pictures BACK because of this story!! #theyareparanoidoffacebooktoo

That was probably tracked as part of the "test", too.

We see the Antichrist all around us today. The trick is to not let the Antichrist see you.
The more information they have, the more power they have. Things like FB give them everything they need. They can use one picture to find you, or one post to destroy you (Like the cop who lost his job for wearing confederate flag underwear in a FB photo )
