California has become the place where politicians go to rich people's homes to talk about the lives of less-fortunate people they rarely meet.
What's notable is the fact that California, despite its huge number of electoral votes, is no longer in play politically in general elections. The state is widely considered to be a shoo-in for Democratic presidential candidates. But contenders from both parties continue to visit to raise money, which they spend on advertising and other campaign costs in battleground states.
Thats why visits by presidential contenders to the Golden State tend to be private affairs rather than public rallies. They fly in, meet with generous donors or those that they hope will become generous donors and jet out.

Chicago is home to Marxist philosophy and politics while Hollywood is home to the Kremlin bank.
Not really.
Because CA is so solidly blue these days, it is not often contested in presidential elections.
The politicians (on both sides) come here mainly for the money.
In the last presidential election, when I wen to volunteer in our local GOP HQ, they had me telephoning voters out of state. That’s how pathetic and depressing politics is here in the one-party People’s Republic of CA.
Democrat candidates love the rich, and flock to the homes of the rich and fall on their knees begging for rich dollars and support. They are like prostitutes coming to see their “Johns”
Embrace the suck Mr. Rall.
Hey, California, if you want the politicians’ attention then divide your electoral votes proportionally by popular vote. (chaaching! 20 electoral votes the Republicans would never have a chance at now)
Dems pretending to care for the poor has been a vote buying scam for decades.
It is precisely liberal policies that have ensured the poor remain dependent upon the government, so as to retain their votes.
The pencil pushers in those gov’t offices are rewarded for expanding their payrolls and number of dependents, not for improving peoples lives.
All the more reason to dump the EC. The GOP will NEVER win the WH again as long as the EC exists.
Ted Rall? Shouldn’t he get an automatic BARF ALERT?
The last solid Republican win was in 1988. Bush beat Gore because of some confused voters in Florida and in 2004 one swing state, Ohio.
That’s 28 years ago since a solid win, a generation.
Ted Rall is a hard core lefty.
Bush won reelection in 2004,by about 3 million votes in the popular vote, if I recall correctly. Was close but no doubt of the outcome. He won Ohio by about 100,000 votes. Not close enough to do Florida style recounts and court cases.
“The Simpson-Mazzoli Act turned California into Mexifornia. “
Worth repeating. And every President since has made the situation worse, Dubya and Obama vying for the top spot.
Well Obama didn’t exactly win landslides in his elections. In fact he was reelected in 2012,with a lesser percentage of the popular vote then his first election. 2016 is winnable for the GOP, but the GOP has to run against the Democrats and the media. And be able to react to media driven events such as Candy Crowley helping the Democrat in a debate or George Step. Planting absurd questions about states banning contraception.
The other side of that is that with the distorting votes of certain large cities, candidates would never visit states in flyover country. They'd hit the top 10 or top 20 cities, and to hell with the rest of the country. That's especially true since the country has been almost perfectly engineered into a 50/50 split for the parties. The smaller states just won't matter at all any more. Small states slit their throat electorally by discarding the idea of winner take all.
Want to be relevant, CA? Stop funding and voting for only one party. Otherwise, hand over the cash to your chosen owners and shut up.
California is only good for a political cash cow. Unless you’re going there to support the rare competitive conservative, just get in, raise bushels of $$$$, and get out. Don’t bother campaigning there.. it’s democrat caliphate territory.
I hear ya and know that argument well. As it stands now, the small states don’t matter anyway. There are 3-4 states that matter and that’s it and they sure ain’t small. And a couple of those states are tending blue and will be blue enough to hand it to the Dims every single time.
We can get a popular vote with the right President. But we can not with the EV UNLESS (and it’s a big one in a presidential year) the Dims stay home.
I hear ya. I just think the EC is a better compromise. What I really want to see is all the Dem states split their votes proportionally, and the Pub states keep winner-take-all :-)
I’ll bet Rall is a frequent guest.
