~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Sierra Army Depot, California Sierra Army Depot is a United States Army post and ammunition storage facility located near the unincorporated community of Herlong, California. It was built in 1942 as one of several ammunition storage facilities located far enough inland to be safe from Japanese attack. The site also met the requirement that the depot be in a dry and isolated area. Since the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure decision (BRAC) to realign the Depot by reducing its conventional ammunition mission, the Depot has increased its emphasis on the receipt, storage, Care of Supplies in Storage (COSIS), repair, assembly, disassembly and shipment of major and secondary items as its primary mission. However, the Depot continues to store conventional ammunition for the Joint Munitions Command (JMC). Core customers include the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, the United States Army Medical Materiel Agency, the Soldier Biological Chemical Command, the U.S. Army Field Support Command, and the Operations Support Command. The Secretary of the Army designated Sierra Army Depot as the Center for Industrial Technical Excellence (CITE) for all Petroleum and Water Distribution Systems (PAWS), and has an extensive maintenance capability that includes: Fabrication, reset, rebuild, machining, corrosion control, COSIS, multi-media blasting, painting, and extensive welding. Sierra Army Depot is the Army's largest facility dedicated to equipment, asset retrograde and reutilization and redistribution. There is long term storage, preservation, and parts reclamation from donor assets of Army Ground Combat and other vehicles through the End of First Life Center.
