This will have the potential to be lengthy, so bear with me and I will try my best to relate my honest feelings on the Confederate flag in question, which was actually the battle flag carried by several Confederate army regiments – and was not the official flag of the Confederacy.
I was born in 1936, a mere 71 years after the Civil War ended, when the South was looked upon by what seemed to be a majority of the Northern States as an inbred, backward, uneducated, slow-talking and slower-thinking people, with low morals and a propensity for incest.
This was in the days before television, and about all the folks up North knew about Southerners was what they heard. There were a lot of people who took great pleasure in proliferating the myth, and some still do it to this day.
As you might suppose, people in the South bitterly resented this attitude of superiority, and in some quarters the words “damn” and “Yankee” became one word. And a somewhat fierce type of Southern pride came into being.
The Confederate battle flag was a sign of defiance, a sign of pride, a declaration of a geographical area that you were proud to be from.
That’s all it is to me and all it has ever been to me.
I can’t speak for all, but I know in my heart that most Southerners feel the same way.
I have no desire to reinstate the Confederacy. I oppose slavery as vehemently as any man, and I believe that every human being, regardless of the color of their skin, is just as valuable as I am and deserves the exact same rights and advantages as I do.

I’ve heard it said the reason Southerners talk slow is so Northerners can comprehend better. ;)
Finally a voice of common sense. The confederate flag is not a symbol of racism, it’s a symbol of southern pride. Why don’t the politicians speak with this much common sense and wisdom?
Southern pride is no longer permitted. Resistance is futile; you will be assimilated.
You will no longer be allowed to be proud of certain things.
Meanwhile, you will be forced to be proud of other things.
Notice how the northern Republicans are trying to distance themselves from their "southern brothers?"
Last week we are told we cannot have the battle flag flying, this week we are told to fly rainbow flags and light up places as a rainbow.
They can all go to hell, as I will fly a battle flag and rainbow flag flyers get a piece of my mind
Simple. They don't have this much common sense and wisdom.
The beauty of common sense. How rare.

The marching band at GA Southern is called ‘Southern Pride’. I was a member, once upon a time. I was also a member of Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps in the middle ‘80s. Our bass drummers stacked their drums at retreat, and hung Confederate Flags. Can’t do that today.
Daniels’ explanation of the flag’s meaning corresponds with mine. I grew up with the imagery of the flag all around. Never even once heard anyone try to connect it to ‘racism’ until well into adulthood.
The hysteria of this past week was a Mao-style attempt at a cultural cleansing. The most sickening aspect was seeing the GOP leaders immediately grovel and cave (which was basically giving legitimacy to the Left’s narrative, and its goal of purging Southern culture). The cowardice by these Republicans is something I’ll never forget. It was like being directly spit in the face, by those who supposedly represent me.
Charlie is showing the wisdom of his years. I wish more people realized that you don't have to say anything until you're ready to say what you really mean, taking as long as it takes.
Obviously Charlie must be a hater. Uh, no. Anything but. Saw CDB a couple of weeks ago here in Reno. Friggin’ awesome show. When Mr. Daniels started “How Great Thou Art” solo, it brought a tight throat and a teary eye to many folks there. Then the entire band joined in. Simply awesome. His definition of “rednecks” is basically hard working folks who do what they have to do in order to make ends meet. Or if you prefer, blue collar workers.
My husband is a big fan of the Drum & Bugle Corps competition. (I think the inclusion of hoochie-coochie dancers was a mistake.)
You’re right, you can’t do that now. The further we get from slavery and serious racial discrimination, the more petty the agitators get in their attempt to keep hostilities alive.
