MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 23, 2015) This week, the Alabama state Senate passed a bill that would end the practice of licensing marriages in the state, effectively nullifying both major sides of the contentious national debate over government-sanctioned marriage.
Introduced by Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Bay Minette), Senate Bill 377 (SB377) would end state issued marriage licenses, while providing marriage contracts as an alternative. It passed through the Alabama state Senate by a 22-3 margin on May 19.
When you invite the state into those matters of personal or religious import, it creates difficulties, Sen. Albritton said about his bill in April. Go back long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Early twentieth century, if you go back and look and try to find marriage licenses for your grandparents or great grandparents, you wont find it. What you will find instead is where people have come in and recorded when a marriage has occurred.
The bill would replace all references to marriages licenses in state law with contracts. The legislation would not invalidate any marriage licenses issued prior to the bill being passed.

“Yes, but, wouldn’t that give the Christian churches the chance to sue for discrimination as the law is not being enforced “equally” among all citizens?”
One would think. However, don’t be surprised if the court held that Christian Churches had no standing to bring such an action.
The beginning of their fall from grace. Now they are communist Massachusetts, and the Godless Universalist Unitarians.
You live in your own little world.
Massachusetts used to be part of Maine.
You live in your own little world.
Yes, now we have 1.5 million people in the whole state.
Or the arm of DC that's the most convenient to you - SS office or federal court, e.g. Better still, just apply online or call it in. Why do you need to show up in person anywhere? You can apply online for all sorts of licenses - why not a marriage license? Leave the religious aspects of it to religious institutions.
Just plain goofy.
If you are so cowardly that you want to hide what you are responding to on freerepublic, that is your cowardly, dishonest character flaw.
Don’t try to conceal who, and what, you are responding to.
Be open and true.
I have and am.Your problem -- and it is your problem -- is that you are so full of yourself that you believe I'd read and was responding to your angry screed throughout the topic. I had not seen it.
Here's a response now -- you are not a mind-reader, you are merely a rude troll.
Actually no, I and none of us had any idea who or what you were responding to on the thread, because you try to conceal that, be open and true.
You might tone down the hysterics some as well, no need to scream.
Again, LIAR, I never have tried to conceal anything. Get it? Get over yourself.
Who or what, was post 112 to?
What’s goofy is you guys claiming it’s a left-wing smear attack on Jefferson.
Why would they attack their own guy?
(I suppose you have an answer for that)
LOL, just wow.
Is that your final answer?
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I mistook you to mean as though the license was issued and enforced by the US Federal government. I see now you mean federalized as in “federalism” which simply binds the separate states together under the US government.
Yes, the states accept all other states licenses as a matter of choice, not force. If one stated decided not to allow it, they could. Stupid, but they could.
Just as my California engineering license does not allow me to be able to stamp engineering plans in any other state but California.
So we are saying the same thing. As I said, the other states are just reciprocating by choice in allowing drivers to use their own state’s license in their state.
I think we are saying the same thing.
Does anyone know why the states issue marriage licenses in the first place? Because the progressives wanted to control the process to make sure no white people married black people. And blood tests were instituted by the progressives to ensure that nobody produced any “undesirables”.
Yep, there’s really no reason for a license. Do people really think their relationships are any better if they are ‘blessed’ by the state?
That isn't why.
The license predates any of that, and banns predate licenses.
Actually, that is the reason.
