The Confederate Battle Flag was a battle flag and nothing else. If you want to take down a flag that has been used to oppress people since the country started start with Old Glory. It was Old Glory waving on the top of slave ships carrying ships. Slavery existed under Old Glory for about 100 years, compared to the four years that the CSA exist. It was Old Glory that Union soldiers under Sherman and Sheridan were carrying as they massacred entire villages of Plains Indians. Now am I calling for the American flag to come down, of course not. For good or bad, flags are part of our history. This whole flag story is silly. Just something for the liberal media to latch onto. Both flags have been used by racists. The preferred flag of the KKK is the American Flag, not the Confederate flag. The vast majority of the Sons of Confederate Veterans are republicans, not democrats and the flag is nothing in the world but a symbol of Southern Heritage. It’s time that this Southern genocide ended. And it’s time that republicans grew pair and quit running scared of democrats and race-baiters.

I am also a Southerner and damn proud of it.

Makes you want to buy a Stars and Bars and fly it proudly. I had relatives who fought on both sides of the war and died for their cause.

It wasn’t all about slavery, it was about states rights and where does the power of the Federal Gummit end. We are still fighting that war and that is what this dust-up is about.

That's too much; whether the flag was used for repression or liberation purposes depended on who was waving it. If you want to remove a symbol of repression, take Andrew Jackson off the $20 bill.

And if we NEED a female replacement, I will cast the first vote for Kaitlyn Jenner, the most recent symbol of the American priorities during the last several years. (Not actually a female, but since we don't actually have a completely black first black president right now, the symbolism syncs nicely).

Do you know any black people? Do you have black friends? And I’m not talking about ghetto thug trash and welfare queens, but the good ole Southern black person who is a good Christian and really a good ole boy just like other Southerners...?

The reason I say this is because I do. And we don’t sit around listening to rap or hip hop but these are guys I can talk frankly to and don’t see my every word and thought as racist and white privilege.

However, they do very much remember the flag waved in their face during those bad times 50 years or so ago, and it is a negative symbol with them.

Can’t we tone it down just a little, or at least agree that THE flag was used unfairly against them then?

Many blacks I speak with realize all the various nuances of the time before the War and what their peoples’ heritage was. My good black friend at Auburn U. is actually descended from one of the biggest WHITE plantation owners who was a Civil War Confederate Colonel. He’s got more “royalty” in his blood than me. Sometimes I call him “Massa”!
