The Right to be Free From Guns (BS alert)
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 25, 2015 | E.J. Dionne

Posted on 06/25/2015 3:38:37 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

My friend Guy Molyneux, a progressive pollster, laid out how it could happen. "We need to build a social movement devoted to the simple proposition that owning handguns makes us less safe, not more," he told me. "The evidence is overwhelming that having a gun in your home increases the risks of suicide, domestic violence and fatal accidents, and yet the number one reason given for gun purchases is 'personal safety.' We need a public health campaign on the dangers of gun ownership, similar to the successful efforts against smoking and drunk driving."

EJ, I hope you personally come to my home to try to take them from me. I truly truly do.

Go into the bad side of town and explain it to the #Pantsdowndontshoot crowd.

These elites are out of touch with reality. It reminds me of Boxer many years ago
when she tried to explain how we didn't need a military, and that the police
were enough to protect us all. Of course the Communists don't want the police
armed either.

So if I can prove a link to bad outcomes, I can ban something?

Abortion?

Sex change surgery?

Practicing a homosexual lifestyle?

"I just wish there was someway to keep these Dips**ts under their rocks where they belong."

There is a method, but it's messy, and currently, socially unacceptable.

Unfortunately, the Left, and a fraction of the GOP, actually believes that they can shred the Constitution without resistance. Millions of dead will demonstrate, one way or another.

A last my safe is empty! All are at the bottom of the lake when I had the boating accident two years ago. I don’t even have a beer cooler as it was lost also.

You took the words right out of my mouth (keyboard).

I feel far more threatened by liberal dolts who want to control me than by anyone with a gun.

If you have a swimming pool and a gun at home, your children are FAR more likely to drown in the pool than get shot with the gun. Ban swimming pools first, then let’s talk about the guns.

(No, I don’t want either one banned. I’m just trying to point out the stupidity and hypocrisy of the left and their attempts to control us all. Gee, I think riding in an airplane is scary. Let’s ban planes. Oh, yeah, and motorcycles, too. I’ve always been afraid of large dogs, wood chippers, lawnmowers, and electricity. We ought to start working on those. And fire. No more fireplaces.)

Come try to take our guns. Tell us who is safer. We, with our guns while you try to get it, or you without the gun Mr. Molyneux.

If you have a car in your driveway, your kids are more likely to die from a car crash than from the swimming pool and gun combined.

“We need a public health campaign”

Follow the money. Congress appropriates billions for health. Much of that goes in grants to study problems, and to do community outreach and navigate the underserved.

What better way to get money from this administration than to push the guns-health angle.

Follow the money.

Lol, "social pressure" from people like Dionne would make me want to go out and buy another gun.

He must only have experience with mewling cowards who get their beliefs from assent of the masses.

Dionne was one of the resident Marxist pundits at the Wash. Post along with hitman/smearman Dana Millbank. At least now he is coming out into the open as a red. Molyneux is well known as a far-leftist.

This is why the denormalization campaign by big government social engineering types against cigarette smokers was so repugnant to freedom loving people.

If they got the smokers, by shaming and denormalizing their behavior through social engineering culturally, they can get anybody. That’s the blueprint.

I don’t want to say “I told you so” but

The “evidence” is very carefully parsed so as to not be an outright lie.

Increased risk of gun accidents. True, it is hard to have a gun accident without a gun. It is also irrelevant. Accidents with guns are at an all time low, in spite of an all time high number of guns. The risk is much lower than owning a swimming pool or a car, and far less than having stairs in your house.

Nearly all gun accidents occur among people who have little sense of responsibility and are high risk takers in many other activities. There are about 1.5 fatal gun accidents per million people per year. There are about 125 fatal car accidents per million people per year.

Increased risk of suicide - Wait, what? I thought the left believed in a right to suicide? Do you get to chose or not? Oh, yes, the left believes in a right to suicide that is approved by the State! There are quite a few suicides that are committed with guns, but there is no evidence that they would not or should not happen without guns. Most suicides with guns, buy the way, are old white men.

The “Domestic Violence” aspect is harder to pin down. But as people who commit domenstic violence are already forbidden from owning guns, it seems a bit redundant.

What E.J. conveniently leaves out is the positive aspects of owning guns.

His whole approach is to “Manufacture Consent”; to use propaganda to get the masses to do what he wants.

With this level of risk, the Progressives can demonize nearly anything that they wish, and that is their modus operendi.

Consider how risky homosexual behavior is, or single parenthood, or abortion, or banning coal, releasing criminals, or many other things the left promotes.

Hard to conceal a cigarette that you’re trying to smoke.

Easy to conceal a handgun that you’re carrying to defend yourself.

Shaming just don’t work against the latter behavior.
