Scott Walker defies gravity, will sign two new gun rights bills

I may have had my own disputes with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker on issues regarding subsidies and energy policy, but I have to offer a tip of my hat to the man on this one. If there was ever a moment in time when every Republican in the country was in danger of running to the shadows on the rights of gun owners, it’s now. But not Walker. He’s signing two new bills into law today which further buttress his constituents Second Amendment rights just as the rest of the nation is focused on South Carolina. (WaPo)

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) plans to sign two new laws on Wednesday that expand the rights of gun owners by removing a 48-hour waiting period for those looking to purchase a firearm and allowing off-duty or retired police officers to carry concealed weapons at public schools. This action will come one week after a suspected gunman shot and killed nine people in an African American church in South Carolina, yet again prompting a national discussion about gun laws in the U.S.

Walker plans to sign the two pieces of legislation — Senate bills 35 and 70 — at a ceremony at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday afternoon, according to a Tuesday evening press release from the governor’s office. Laurel Patrick, a spokeswoman for the governor, said this bill-signing was scheduled and announced about two weeks ago, several days before the shooting occurred in South Carolina.

We’ve seen far too many cases where somebody in the Governor’s position would find an excuse to postpone the signing ceremony, and how shocked would anyone be if he’d done that? But it’s full steam ahead in Wisconsin’s capital with a move that’s going to polish up his brand with the conservative base. Walker already has an A+ rating with the NRA, but they may have to start inventing new letters for the classification system tonight.

Leon Wolf at Redstate, on how to extend a giant middle finger to the enemies of America.

Scott Walker for all his flaws knows how to extend a giant middle finger to the anti-American left and he isn’t the slightest bit shy about doing it. That counts for a lot, not just with me but with a huge portion of the GOP primary electorate who has been begging for someone who could prove that you can win elections and govern effectively while taking on liberal sacred cows at the same time. Scott Walker seems determined to be that guy and so far it is working.

Not much more to be said on this one. Scott Walker is walking the walk. If the voters in his home state are upset by this I’m sure he’ll hear about it soon enough. But if the unions couldn’t bring him down, I rather doubt that anti-gun rights groups will be that interested in yet another turn in the ring with him. As of this afternoon I’m taking a fresh look at Walker. His early campaign was marred with a few unforced errors, but he’s clearly not one to throw in the towel at the first sign of adversity.

No offense, but Ted Cruz winning the Heller case before the Supreme Court makes Scott’s signing bills approved by Wisconsin legislature small change.

Just another nasty Cruz supporter rears his head.

“Walker did the right thing to sign this bill. No complaints from me on this one.”

Yes, he did the right thing, and that is good. But consider how low our standards have fallen. Scott Walker does what any honorable Governor should do: honor his committments in the face of insane, dishonorable, illogical, emotional and unreasonable demands by the left and old media, who are essentially the same.

For this, he gets accolades. Anyone who folds to the left, should be immediately disqualified from the primaries.

As Sarah Palin noted, we must stop allowing the left, in the form of the old media, pick our candidates. It is how conservatives have been losing for 70 years.

Reagan was not picked by the old media. Initially, he was allowed to run, because they thought he would be easy to beat.

Since Reagan’s time the left has started the strategy of destroying any conservative leader before they can attain higher office. They went into overdrive on Palin; she was off their screen before McCain picked her.

They have tried to go after Walker, but he has beat them at every turn.

This, and Walker has a real record to prove that he cut big government spending. With less big government spending, gun control advocates will have less time and money to push for gun control.

That’s why Walker is in front.

I don’t think so. Cruz’s support for massive H1B immigrants mitigates a lot of the good in other areas. It’s why Walker is #2 and Cruz is #7 in the average of polls:

Real Clear Politics average:

RCP Average 5/19 - 6/18

Bush 12.7

Walker 11.7

Rubio 10.7

Carson 9.7

Huckabee 8.7

Paul 8.0

Cruz 6.5

Christie 4.5

Perry 3.5

Trump 3.2

Fiorina 1.8

Santorum 1.8

Kasich 1.7

Graham 1.3

Jindal 0.8

Spread Bush +1.0

“If we had pulled back on this, I think it would have given people the erroneous opinion that what we signed into law today had anything to do with what happened in Charleston,” Walker said at the ceremony, held at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.......

The comment might have been unnecessary but by no means could it be considered “nasty.”

I am a supporter of Ted Cruz but I like Walker as well. As many have said, there are no perfect candidates but I applaud those who take a principled stand and follow through like Walker did today.

I don’t see any firearms in that photo. Need a few semi-auto rifles and handguns for background color.

Cruz is good in front of the court.

Walker is good in front of the people.

.. He’s definitely smart enough and has looked good in speeches and interviews, but it remains to be seen how good a debater he is. ..So at this point, I would say if Walker can show he can at least hold his own and hopefully be strong in the debates, the nomination is probably his to lose.
