As Pride Week gets underway in Seattle, Mayor Ed Murray unveiled new rainbow crosswalks at several Capitol Hill intersections Tuesday morning.
There are 11 crosswalks on Capitol Hill getting the rainbow treatment -- for a total cost of more than $100,000 according to the city's transportation director. Seven of those were painted and treated overnight and four others will be finished Tuesday night.
The idea has been discussed for some time, but was delayed by logistics and cost. It was initially said that the colorful crosswalks cost about $6,000 for a total of $66,000 for all 11.
The money comes from fee that developers pay when they block streets and sidewalks to build projects, not other safety money.
"You know, it says something about this neighborhood, it says something about Seattle -- this is a city of very diverse neighborhoods throughout, with character and obviously an opportunity to celebrate pride nationally. We hope to celebrate more than sidewalks in the next few days, Murray said.
All the crosswalks are east of Broadway on Tenth and 11th Avenues.
The crosswalks are expected to last three to five years, but the city said it plans to maintain them for years to come.

No...really...why?
Rather symbolic - the trampling on of God’s sacred Covenant.
It’s time for Christians to take back the rainbow.
The Mayor thought of everything. It even has its own glory hole.
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG WE ARETH TOTALLY GONNATH SIP FRUITY COCKTAILS TONIGHTTH!
In one area, Seattle has a statue of Lenin. What’s next? Red crosswalks in that area to celebrate Red Pride?
How precious. That sidewalk is just ax-ing for a new splash coat donation of white stucco paint.
LOL!
No matter how you feel about gays, there is something so wrong with this.
“The money comes from fee that developers pay when they block streets and sidewalks to build projects, not other safety money.”
Money that could have been put into something that actually might have improved the city. Rainbow crosswalks are no more functional than non-rainbow crosswalks.
What a stupid waste of funds.
Apparently.
So a municipality will use tax dollars to paint a non-governmental flag in the crosswalks?
If I say I’m offended, will they paint over it?
$15 min. wage...but these guys were union no doubt.
Is this like marking a street MLK? That way visitors from out of town understand when they are in an area they should avoid?
In Seattle?
You’d probably be sent to the loony bin.
Would love to see one of these “street artists” paint a confederate flag in a cross walk.
