As a general matter, I agree (as did Ronald Reagan) that free trade is good for America; when we open up foreign markets, it helps American farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers. But TPA in this Congress has become enmeshed in corrupt Washington backroom deal-making, along with serious concerns that it would open up the potential for sweeping changes in our laws that trade agreements typically do not include. Since the Senate first voted on TPA, there have been two material changes. First, WikiLeaks subsequently revealed new troubling information regarding the Trade in Services Agreement, or TiSA, one of the trade deals being negotiated by Obama. Despite the administrations public assurances that it was not negotiating on immigration, several chapters of the TiSA draft posted online explicitly contained potential changes in federal immigration law. TPA would cover TiSA, and therefore these changes would presumably be subject to be fast-track. When TPA last came up for a vote, both Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)80% and I introduced amendments that would have barred fast-track treatment for any trade agreement that attempted to impact immigration law. Two other Republican senators objected, and we were both denied votes on our amendments. Instead, the House inserted substantially weaker language in related legislation.

TPA is not the problem. Obama/Boehner are the problem.
The TPA bill has been changed by liberals. Thats why Ted Cruz changed his vote.
It’s just that simple Hostage.
There was no jumping to conclusions. We were all commenting on actual votes to give Obama more power and take it away from Congress.
Comparing it to previous TPAs was also a BOGUS argument. When Bush asked for it in 2003 he first published the WHOLE agreement before asking for TPA.
This bunch is evidently fine with giving Obama free reign. I’m sure it will work out well since he has our best interests at heart.
Any of you care to bet me that as soon as Obama gets this power we have a completed agreement in our face in a couple months and TPP is law and shoved down our throats before the end of the year?
This was all a charade. And saying TPP was still largely unwritten was just another ploy used to try to justify betraying us and hide the terrible facts behind this trade agreement.
I am grateful that Cruz realized he was wrong with his first vote. That is progress and we all certainly make mistakes.
The main fact I railed against is still true. Obama, McConnell, Boehner, Ryan, Rubio, and many others are acting against us.
I think any and every politician that voted for TPA under these circumstances should be primaried and replaced. Boehner should have NEVER be re-elected as Speaker. I wish they would remove him in the most uncomfortable way and he cried for weeks.
There is always reconciliation between bills that have passed the two Houses.
So there you go. Your only choices are Paul, Huckabee and Carson. Good luck with that.
The TPA shouldn’t have been ‘acceptable to him’ because it gave Obama power!
That is the point!
Actually, it is your opinion.
I can hardly believe how people on Fr have let emotions and the Demorats get to them the way that they have...they’re being played and can’t see it....really disturbing to me for I valued opinions...but when I see this hype and them falling into line with the “agenda” to rock the boat....then it’s just discouraging to see here on FR.
Seems too many are like fan club kids who run from one star to another like in the tabloids....
“No, what has been shown is that Cruz isn’t ready for the big leagues. “
And your choice to save the world would be? Jeb Bush? Donald trump?
I would say it is the result of propaganda wars.
People need to look at where their propaganda comes from.
...”There was no jumping to conclusions. We were all commenting on actual votes”....
Freepers were commenting long before Cruz even took a stand...even saying he was for TPP when in fact he was for TPA. So this escalated long before any knew which way Cruz would go.
So I will stand on my post....
I am so done with repeating myself to you and other imbeciles. I wrote some many fact laden responses and many to you.
If you can’t handle simple comprehension I can’t help you anymore.
Fact is he voted one way the first time and the opposite and correct way after he had time to think about. If that is too much for you then so be it.
No false arguments about this TPA being so different. Only a few small things were added so don’t embarrass yourself.
Yes, a few minor changes gave Cruz the room to explain why he was voting differenyly, but I am POSITIVE that if he had it to do all over again he would have never voted aye in the first place because it cost him so many supporters.
I really don’t care, he did the right thing on the second try and I give him credit for that. There is no need to serve as an apologist for him. We all make mistakes.
And I find it unfortunate that even after your Idol votes to show that I was right the whole time, you still can
t let it go.
I was right the WHOLE time. Soak it up and deal with. If you want to respond and dig yourself deeper, go ahead.
This is a concerted, full throated trashing of Cruz by those who have never supported him. From those like Diogenesis who has repeatedly libeled Heidi Cruz who is getting no money from Goldman Sachs during her leave of absence, to those who are secretly mad that Cruz changed his vote when new facts emerged about trade deals in negotiation.
I trust Cruz and admire him for staying on top of events and changing his vote when those events shifted in a way he could not support.
You think because Pelosi was against it was a good conservative Bill?
It was a Bill that gave Obama unlimited trade power.
The fact that the Left was against some part of it doesn't make it a good Conservative Bill!
That was the same kind of 'reasoning' that my Congressman's Kevin Brady's staff tried to use on me, 'well the unions are against it....'
He was elected to stop Obama.
Cruz ran as a candidate for the Tea Party!
His run was against Obama and the GOP Establishment!
And in the first major issue, he caved!
