S.C. Gov. Haley says 'time has come' to remove Confederate flag from state buildings

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said Monday the Confederate flag should be removed from the grounds of the state capitol, reversing her position on the divisive symbol amid growing calls for it to be removed.

The Republican's about-face comes after nine black church members were gunned down, allegedly by a young white man who embraced the flag as a symbol of white supremacy.

"150 years after the end of the Civil War, the time has come," Haley said after rousing applause, surrounded by Democrats and Republican lawmakers. "That flag, while an integral part of the past, does not represent the future of our great state"

The flag has flown in front of the state capitol for 15 years after being moved from atop the Statehouse dome.

U.S. Sens. Lindsay Graham and Tim Scott, an African-American appointed by Haley, were standing with Haley during her announcement. When she finished, she hugged Scott and South Carolina's only other black congressman, Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn.

The announcement came after state lawmakers met urgently with each other and the governor.

The head of the Republican National Committee has also called for its removal.

Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, both of whom are Republican and running for president, said that whether to remove the flag or not was an issue for South Carolinians to determine.

The time has come for Nikki H. to be voted out of office. She has no roots to South Carolina and obviously respect for or interest in our history.

She's a politician. Come crunch time did you really expect her to do anything different?

I hate it when people knock my heroes off their pedestals. I like to believe the best of people, but it is only rational to expect the worst.

I hope she took a shower after hugging Clyburn. He’s one of the most execrable racists in Congress.

On May 24, 2010, Will Folks, former press secretary for Governor Mark Sanford, claimed on his blog that he had an inappropriate physical relationship with Haley “several years ago”.[62] Haley denied the claim, stating “I have been 100 percent faithful to my husband throughout our 13 years of marriage. This claim against me is categorically and totally false.”[63] Folks attempted to substantiate his claim by releasing phone records that he said showed 700 calls between the two while Folks was working as a political consultant for the Haley campaign.[64][65] Folks claimed that he was “forced” to reveal the (alleged) affair himself, before Haley’s political foes publicized it first (to sabotage her campaign).[66]

On June 3, 2010, Larry Marchant, a political consultant, made a statement alleging that he and Haley had a one-time sexual encounter. Marchant made his claim while serving as a consultant to Haley’s rival for the governorship.[67]

In a June 2010 interview, Haley said that if she were elected governor and the claims were later validated, she would resign the office.[68]

And where does this stop? Memorials? Cemeteries? Why don’t we just forget that about 700,000 men died in the Civil War.

I submit that Haley didn't get knocked off her pedestal, she jumped off herself. But I understand when someone you once respected prove they are not, and perhaps never were, worthy of that respect.

So what flag are they going to fly at the Memorial to the Confederate Dead? Oh wait, the memorial is probably next on their list of to-do things. If that’s the case, then they need to get rid of the memorial to African-Americans that also stands on the capital grounds. What’s fair is fair.

Exactly. Such appeasement is not seen as a sign of solidarity but a sign of weakness. They will be back for more.

Those who oppose the battle flag don’t have a clue about the atrocities where the stars and stripes flew,i.e. slave ships, robbing, raping, killing and removing Indians.
One poster told me that it has all been corrected unlike the battle flag. Really so flying on slave ships has been corrected, have the Indians been give all their lands back? No

We have people who want to attack the flag while ignoring history about other flags. This flag had nothing to do with the shooting as he the nutcase wore two other flags on his jacket and not a peep form the media who are pushing this.

She will get NO credit from the left or the media (but I repeat myself) for doing this.

You are correct, however, it would behoove us to repeat the narrative over and over again, as much as possible - the message is a good one, reduced to a soundbite that the average voter will latch on to: The Confederate flag was raised by the racist Democrats, and the Republicans ended it

Offense Offense Offense - Playing offense in politics doesn't get any better than this, and playing defense is the losing proposal. in this case, repeating the narrative FORCES the left into defense on the issue. Whether she gets any credit or not doesn't matter, because no matter what, the fact remains, the Confederate flag was raised by a Democrat, and it took a Republican to save the day once again, just like Abe Lincoln!

Now, you and I both know this is BS, like I said, symbolism over substance. BUT - there is no denying the brilliance behind the strategy and, if played correctly, could very well be a strong offensive strategy.

Republican woman undoing what White “racist” DemoRATs, the likes of Hollings and BJ Clinton, brought forth.

Remember that Black Americans.

Republican Presidents were the first to invite Black men into the White House, Lincoln invited Douglass and TR Roosevelt invited Geo. Washington Carver, all against the wishes and vitriol of DemoRAT scum.

Remember Black Americans who overwhelmingly voted for the Voting Rights Act - Republicans NOT Southern DemoRATs

Stop being a slave to your white DemoRAT masters.

Maybe removing the Confederate flag will resolve the ISIS terrorism problem. Or maybe, it will magically create enough ships for the United States to deploy its own troops.
