I actually do have one concern if he is lighter-skinned black....the unwillingness of the media to admit that, especially after having him declared white. It would be a shock to their world view. They wouldn’t know how to send the message, “move right along, nothing to see here..” that they normally send in crimes within the black community.
Also, in my gut, I think it’s not unimportant that one of the victims was a SC state senator.

Interesting but how are they supposed to describe someone they’re looking for? That leads into a whole other discussion and I think everyone’s burned out on Dolezal. My question is why a church. Time to turn off the news because now it’s wild speculation. I’ll have to check in on FR more often.
These look like Video still frame captures. You get some frame overlay and you get pixilation around the edges of moving sections of the photo due to compression algorithms. I still think it’s background and noise, but I’m not a professional, so take it for what it’s worth.

Nonetheless, it’s not sheer speculation for observers to observe about a picture that the skin looks darker than what is normally thought of as “white”.
That raises all kinds of speculation, but as you say, wild speculation isn’t worth listening to.
As for it being a church, that’s why I think the Senator is also important. It was a known time and place for the Senator to be. It being a church could be incidental to that.
Theory: This has nothing to do with race. This is related to a power struggle within the AME church with those involved taking advantage to further political gains via race issues. Too well organized, executed and exploited.
