(CNN)The images are heartrending: Desperate families fleeing fighting, frantically trying to get their small children across the barbed wire fence separating Syria from Turkey. On the other side of the fence are bearded fighters from the self-styled Islamic State armed with machine guns and smiling coldly as they patrol thousands of civilians trapped on the Syrian side. The gunmen have reportedly been forcing those trying to flee to return to their homes in the war zone.
But while the border is where the cameras are, more pivotal events are taking place a few miles away, where ISIS is on the verge of suffering a potentially devastating loss -- the strategic city Tal Abyad and its surrounding areas. The defeat appears poised to come at the hands of the YPG, the Kurdish People's Protection Units, whose fighters, men and women, a few months ago liberated the devastated city of Kobani.

ISIS is supported by NATO member Turkey?
Geez, these Kurds rock. What if we gave them real weaponsry, the good stuff. can they be trusted? They are muslim and I’ve read of an honor killing by kurds. But they seem to be the best hope right now.
If so, expect our illustrious leader President Pole Dancer to do anything he can to stop Isis from being run off by the Kurds.
The Kurds are our only true ally (other than Israel). Interestingly, the Iraqi Kurds in the north are allies of Israel and have proclaimed so because they feel they have both suffered the same type of oppression. They have shown time and again (be it Syrian or Iraqi Kurds) that they can be trusted. They are the only ones interested in creating a modern 21st century secular state. Out of all the peoples in the area, the Kurds of Syria, Turkey and Iraq deserve their own country.
The Khurds are better than the Brotherhood or ISIS and love their country.
Pray America is waking

You said it and I agree. The Kurds look to tomorrow instead of living in the past.
The Kurds just have resolve. That’s the main difference.
And they have a sense of national identity, even without a nation-state. The Arabs don't.
So far, they've proven they can be. I'd be far more inclined to trust the Kurds than the lowly Arabs.
It appears that the Turks leadership - and possibly their military - fear the Kurds and hate Assad more than they care about an ISIS led state on their border. It’s very short sighted. I am hopeful that the Kurds who will be entering the government can oppose and expose this duplicitous collaboration.
They’re getting some pretty good stuff.
They also aren’t nutcases. The Kurdish PM or equivalent said, “We Kurds want to go home and hug our children at night, while Daesh (ISIS) want to lurk around and murder for sport”.
The Kurds are very pro-American. You can ask anyone who has been around them; they appreciate the support the US has given them during Saddam’s years and their liberation by US forces.
Well, they’ve had to fight the Turks, the Syrians, the Iraqis, and the Iranians for the longest times. The Turks deny they’re even a separate group of people. They call them mountain Turks and pretend they don’t have their own language.
