One local NAACP member is asking for Rachel Dolezal's resignation. Kitara Johnson has set up an online petition through the website MoveOn.Org and has received more than 200 signatures as of Sunday night.
"We don't care what race she is, but when you are leader, it doesn't even matter if you've made a mistake but the fact that you will not respond to the people, that you won't issue and apology,” Johnson said. “Come clean.”
Dolezal has been portraying herself as an African American, despite the face that her Montana birth certificate lists her as white. Johnson said that she was fully behind Dolezal when the allegations came out, but changed her mind when she saw KXLY 4 News exclusive interview.
“Are you African American?” Reporter Jeff Humphrey asked Dolezal on Wednesday. After a moment of silence, Dolezal responded, “I don't understand the question.”
Johnson said she was floored by her answer.
“So you mean to tell me that your going to lie within a lie and say you don't understand the question,” Johnson said. “And you don't know if your African American or not because she had been proudly professing that."
Johnson said that's also why she is concerned with the position taken by the national NAACP. Last week, the organization released a statement that said in part: “The NAACP Alaska-Oregon-Washington State Conference stands behind Ms. Dolezal's advocacy record.”
Johnson said that record has been based on lies.
“I've asked people to boycott the NAACP, do not go to meetings, do not pay membership until they reconsider the decision to back a person they consider a leader, because we don't,” Johnson said.
Johnson has also planned a peaceful demonstration before Spokane NAACP's regular meeting on Monday. She and others planned to meet outside the building on 25 W. Main at 6 p.m. and hold signs until the meeting starts at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, the Spokane NAACP wrote on their Facebook page that the meeting was canceled. The post reads:
“Due to the need to continue discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders, tomorrow's meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. We appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.”
Johnson said the peaceful protest will continue whether or not there is meeting. She said that she wants to forgive Dolezal, but first she needs to apologize to set a good example.
“It's time to show the next generation that doing the right thing goes out of style and that integrity and honesty is how you move forward in life to become successful," Johnson said.
