KOKOMO, Ind. - Police in Kokomo are investigating the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect by a police officer at a gas station southeast of the city.
Police say a ten-year veteran of the Kokomo Police Department responded to the report of an armed robbery at the Casey's General Store at Dixon Road and Defenbaugh Street around 5:30 p.m. Friday. The officer got to the scene to find a female suspect pointing a handgun at the store clerk.
The officer ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, at which point, the woman pointed the gun at the officer. The officer fired shots, striking the suspect.
The officer then called for medical assistance for the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect's name is being withheld, pending notification of family members. The officer involved in the shooting also has not been identified.
No one else was reported injured at the scene.

UPDATE:
Kokomo officer involved in Friday night shooting identified
KOKOMO, Ind. - Kokomo police have released the name of the officer involved in Friday night's deadly shooting.
Our newsgathering partners at The Kokomo Tribune report Roy Smith is a 10-year veteran officer.
Police say he shot a 17-year-old girl who was pointing a gun at a gas station clerk during an attempted robbery. This happened inside Casey's General Store on Dixon Road.
The teenager's name has not been released.
Investigators say her weapon was later determined to be a type of air gun.
The Howard County prosecutor will now review the case.
I did a quick check.
October 3, 2014 - An extension of the dashboard cameras in squad cars, the Kokomo Police Department’s new body cameras allow officers to record any contact they have with the public.
The city purchased more than 60 of the cameras for patrol officers, traffic officers and K-9 officers, Maj. Brian Seldon said.
Thanks. I shoulda looked that up myself.
I know a couple of Kokomo policemen, & I hadn’t heard the name of the officer involved. Not one I know but feel sad for what lies ahead for him.

Women involved in violence makes my heart hurt. Not the way it is supposed to be. Happens way too much & they are getting younger & younger.
In Indiana, any Joe Blow off the street would be legally justified in stopping a potential life threatening situation such as this.
Some people, (not most FReepers, mind you) seem to think cops don’t have that same legal protection.
..and gas stations..
Another child victim of gun violence.
At least this cop hit what he was shooting at.
It did not say the usual “,who is white,” and “,who is black,” crap so we know it was not a White cop and a Black robber.
PC racism will be the end of another officer’s career.
shoot her again...
Imma hoping the girl wasn’t black for that very reason. This small city will not tolerate this being turned into a Tamir Rice thing.
I’d hate to have to help run Al Sharpton and Co out of town on a rail.
We’ll, come to think of it, I wouldn’t mind doing that one bit.
But I fear this will give the gun-grabbing fascists another incident to glom onto since it turned out to be an air pistol.
I agree, but lately the identity of the involved cop has been prominently featured. My question was as to whether the authorities were being prudent or protective, and I speculated that if protective, perhaps it was either a woman or a minority, or both, because that's the way it is these days.
I've been through Kokomo countless times but I know no one there. I bet the locals all know who she was.
BTW, thank the lord they finally built a bypass.
I understood what you meant.
I suspect we may know by morning. Something will show up on Twitter or Facesplat.
