Baltimore police arrested fewer people in May than in any month for at least three years, despite a surge in homicides and shootings across the city triggering safety concerns among residents..
Several neighborhoods saw declines of more than 90 percent from April to May, while arrests in the West Baltimore area where Freddie Gray was arrested dropped by more than half during the same period, according to a Baltimore Sun analysis of police data. Citywide, arrests declined 43 percent from April to May.
"I've noticed fewer police," said Steve Dixon, program director for the Penn North Recovery Center in West Baltimore. "We're having robberies at the playground in broad daylight. All these murders and shootings, we're having them in broad daylight."
The dramatic citywide decline which has sparked a debate about police pulling back on enforcement efforts came in the aftermath of the death of Gray. Six officers have been charged in the death of the 25-year-old, who suffered spinal injuries while in police custody and died a week after his April 12 arrest.
City leaders and police union officials have provided explanations for the slowdown....

Somehow, I don’t think Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will be re-elected. So much for this particular rising star being inflicted on the rest of the country.
You can’t always get what you want. But in this case, enjoy!
Isn’t this kind of what they’ve asked for? A soft police force? Well, they got it, and now they are having buyer’s remorse. Sorry about that.
Yes.
Punish the behavior you want to eliminate.
Reward the behavior you want to increase.
Baltimore punishes proactive police work.
Baltimore rewards corruption, rioters and looters.
No surprises here...
Tough poop. The cops are there to protect everyone, even lowlife thugs. They are throwing cops in jail to sacrifice them to the great god of political correctness. Too bad. Baltimore is getting what it deserves.
I see what you did there...
We lost the war on this. Send the helicopters, pull our people out and be done.
Bring Your Own Tongue & Groove? This is a thread about hardwood floors?
Historically there is a 3rd option: Vigilantees. But if the people of Baltimore thought Police were violent — just wait.
Note to these residents: you may despise “the man,” but let’s face it, you depend on him ... for your health, your safety and all the necessities of your miserable lives.
Bring your own tires (tyres?) and gasoline (petrol?).
Sucks eh baltimore?
But just think of all the black men who are not going to jail
At least there is a drop in incarceration
Keeper and hope it is actually on display
Mr Patel in the story is asking too much for a couple of sodas that were probably past their pull date, anyway. The cops could have accepted his suspicion, backed up by nothing, and found the guy for questioning. He might even have been carrying an illegal weapon or been in violation of probation. That would have been “aggressive policing” and might have taken a criminal off the street.
But since they would have had no probable cause, given no security camera pictures of him, in Baltimore today, the police would have been the ones arrested.
Mr Patel should get a real security camera instead of the cheap bit of plastic he has now, before he complains about the police.
But we have her predecessor Martin “ rainman” O’Malley offering himself as a fresh democrat party rock star
Oh my gosh. I thought of the same thing... Have a great Flag Day.
I don’t believe there were any arrests or even a cop in my neighborhood in May, yet there were no reports of violent crimes that month.
