WASHINGTON, DC: When it comes to increasing skilled workers on H-1B visas, one could say presidential candidate Ted Cruz is a bit of a black sheep amongst the GOP.The Republican presidential candidate wants to increase the H-1B visas by 500 percent from its 65,000 to 325,000.
Cruz, who announced his run for the Oval office this morning, had made the proposition in 2013 as an amendment to the Senates comprehensive immigration bill. While the Senates Judiciary Committee torpedoed Cruzs amendment, they did approve an increase of 180,000 in the H-1B cap, but the House never acted on the legislation. Its not clear if Cruz had only the base 65,000 H-1B visas for skilled workers from around the globe to emigrate to the US in mind, and he didnt want to include the 20,000 other H-1B visas which are allocated especially for students who graduate from universities in the US.

Never mind, I won’t waste any more of your time.
You’ve obviously made up your mind and have no intent of changing it no matter what the facts may be.
Also reported here.
Cruz, who announced his presidential bid this morning, once proposed an immediate increase in the base H-1B cap from 65,000 to 325,000. Cruz offered the H-1B increase as an amendment in 2013 to the Senate’s comprehensive immigration bill.
Cruz’s amendment was defeated by the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, which approved an 180,000 H-1B cap increase in the comprehensive immigration bill. The House never acted on this legislation.
Correct me if it’s not accurate.
We don’t have a STEM worker shortage. We have a shortage of STEM workers willing to work for 50-70% less than they make today.
The biggest problem in the USA is the crisis of confidence. That is Obama’s real legacy, we are all running scared.
H-1B encourages companies to lay off high-skilled Americans and replace them with H-1B foreigners — because they can hire them at a lower wage.
Companies have been doing this for decades.
In the early 1980s I knew an H-1B hire who had 2 PhDs in mechanical and electrical engineering, several patents in his name, etc. The company in mid-America hired him in at a salary lower than it was paying clerks and secretaries.

Cruz wanting to increase H-1Bs — not good. Not when there are 90 million of employment age who were forced out of work in the Obama economy.
Yep. I could see this spinning out of control fast. Are H-1B immigrants allowed to bring their families with them? Or a better question: if they brought their families (including aunts, uncles, cousins), who would stop them?
I ve got to disagree. There are a lot of highly skilled people that cannot find good jobs.
Bringing a bunch of foreigners in just lowers their wages and opportunities. Yeah, I know Zuckerberg and those billionaires disagree.
Anyone who says it is necessary in order to provide adequate Tech Talent is a liar.
A liar's liar.
What they REALLY should say is it keeps the cost of tech talent low by flooding the market with IT folks who are willing to work at $20-$30/hour instead of the $70/hour they would have to pay a US citizen.
To many folks in rural parts of the country, $30/hr doesn't sound too bad.
But in the cities of the West Coast it's near poverty wage.
Cruz is now dead to me.
A few hours ago I got another fund raise request from the Cruz campaign. I sent them a reply that no money and no support what so ever because of his H1B visa and TPP stand and to please take me off their list.
I do regret sending him money twice since he announced and I voted for him as my congressman.
Its time for a 15 year moratorium on ALL immigration.
Yep. I don’t want them here.
I am just about off the Cruz train.
Say it ain’t so, Joe!
“The biggest problem in the USA is the crisis of confidence. That is Obamas real legacy, we are all running scared.”
Today reminds me of Jimmy Carter’s malaise. It was as if he presided over the death of America. Then came Reagan. Hopefully we’ll have another Reagan. If not we are in for a decline into third world status. (In many ways we’re there. Detroit, LA, New Orleans, Baltimore, are all a view of where we are heading if we don’t pull out of this dive.)
Make the law such that the H-1B Visa holders must be paid in the 95th percentile of their field in a nationwide average. If they are “highly skilled”, they should be highly paid.
The H1-B program would die almost instantly.
As you probably know, thats always been a sleight of hand. I work in a technical field, many of my co-workers are H1B, others have found other ways to legally work by presenting themselves as management when in fact they are just worker-bees. Since I generally like these people on a personal level, and they are generally pretty competent, I'm not complaining about this on a personal level.
But its easy to get around the "no americans available" clause, I've seen it done again and again. You just run a very detailed ad written around they guy's resume. No one will precisely meet the requirements as written. They do it all the time.
If we were going to expand H1B, then we should be reducing other immigration in other categories. But, really, we have lots of tech workers here and sometimes the wages just stagnate.
And it's worth noting that this man has been paying taxes all his adult life. His father or grandfather probably helped save America by serving in the Second World War. This man deserves consideration, lots of consideration.
It wasn’t a threat, it was a request. But thanks for revealing yourself.
Meanwhile Ted is gathering more and more support among the grassroots while hecklers like yourself wouldn’t dare pipe up at any townhall where Ted appears. And if you did, Ted would respond with class and and clarity leaving you spinning in the wind.
Your name in the catalog will be used to ping you when Ted captures the critical momentum which he is now in the processing of achieving. And I predict you will not respond as I doubt you have the class to admit you were wrong.
What fairyland do you live in?
No, make it 150% of the "prevailing wage".
That would end it immediately.
