The secret meeting where Ted Cruz argued that the right should unite behind him and [Truncated]
Hot Air ^

But as the forum got underway, it became apparent that most of the speakers hadn’t prepared themselves accordingly. In fact, five of the six candidates gave some version of the standard stump speech they offer the public, attendees said, ignoring what one described as “the elephant in the room, this idea that people want to coalesce behind one candidate.”

The lone exception was Cruz. “He was the only one who bought into that and tailored his entire speech to it,” says the attendee, who, despite working for a rival candidate, gushed that on a scale of 1 to 10, Cruz’s speech was a 14. “He was pitch-perfect. He got briefed well by his staff. He came in like a lawyer making his case, effectively saying, ‘I am the only one who can unite the movement.’ ”

“Cruz blew everyone else out of the water,” says a second attendee, a CNP organizer who has not signed on with any of the 2016 contenders. “He made the best case, I think, for conservative leaders and organizations to think strategically about working together to help propel a conservative candidate into contention. … He was savvy enough to understand what that room wanted to hear. Don’t just come and give us your conservative speech. Tell us: Why should we should support you? And tell us: What’s your plan to win?”

Seriously, SoConPubbie, take me off this stupid list.

I no longer support Ted Cruz, the Great American Sell-Out!

Let's go through the process, rather than this back-room stuff. Cruz messed up big time on ObamaTrade and his call for more H-1B workers (instead of demands those jobs go to US citizens) and now he's trying to define conservatism around himself.

I'm for the candidate most like Jeff Sessions, who as you say, isn't running. Any "conservative" would be wise to use him for wisdom and as a role model.

The way that DC smog is getting to most of them, Donald Trump is looking better every day.

You know it's a bad day when Marcia Fudge is 100% with jobs for US citizens while "conservative" sellouts in DC earn their paycheck from their corporate sponsors.

I think it will be interesting to hear a debate between Senators Paul and Cruz. Paul will challenge Cruz on the particulars of issues related to freedom (secret courts, secret deals, presidential powers, what a limited federal government means in practice) and Cruz will challenge Paul on foreign policy issues (when is force justified, what is America’s role in world affairs, etc.)

I think explanations from both candidates will be far more revealing than what some their opponents have painted. I think Libertarians are going to be disappointed with Paul and Law and Order Republicans will be disappointed with Cruz.

I find both of these candidates to be the two most interesting. The rest are cookie cutter candidates who will do and say whatever they think they need to do or say to get elected.

There is no doubt who the sharpest tool in the GOP shed is.

It’s like herding cats, can’t be done. I came back to read the other comments.

This place is going to be fun this time next year when we are being subjected to all the usual exhortations that we HAVE to support the GOP nominee.

No, I don’t, if that nominee wants to give the country to fraudulently documented foreigners.

Ted Cruz made a couple of votes recently that I would have voted differently. He made a good argument why he voted the way he did.
I don’t trust politicians generally, but I’ll trust Ted Cruz more than most.

Well, I am super happy that you just added my name to the Cruz ping.
I thought trade meant our goods would be exported to many more countries, meaning that we would have to manufacture more goods, meaning there would be more jobs for blue collar workers.
I guess I have that all wrong. I’ll have to learn more

LOL, Donald, really? The man who donated to Hillary Clinton, etc....that Donald?

You want Cruz to compare to Sessions? He can’t...he is MORE Conservative than Sessions. So, which candidate, for you, is most like Sessions? who do you really support?

Tell me what you oppose about this trade deal and how you know better about it than Cruz? BTW, he voted for TPA, not TPP. Do your homework, there is a difference.

Given his posting history, and behavior, I am pretty sure he is a Paul-bot!

BTW, who are you supporting?

We don't vote in New Hampshire for 243 days.

Check back with me after I've had the chance to meet all of them.

Do yourself a favor Maris, and dig deep on these issues. Do not allow your opinion to be framed for you by the posts of keyboard warriors, many of them Rand Paul supporters.

First, find out exactly why Ted Cruz supports these issues by reading what HE says. For each issue, his statements in support of or against are posted here on FreeRepublic.

Secondly, try to prove/disprove the assertions of those who are "screaming the loudest" about how Ted Cruz is wrong on these issues.

The real evidence you will find, if you truly do your homework, just might surprise you.

Giving a majority to Obama was a bad idea. Any more trade bills that aren't in the open is a bad idea. And maybe this country needs another grand showman, in the style of PT Barnum to shake things up.

You asked me who my kind of conservative is, and I said Jeff Sessions. He may not meet your definition, but to some of us he's the one who "gets it".

This "how I know better than Cruz". I don't know if I do or not, since we can't read and discuss the thing. And that statement assumes Cruz's intellect is so superior no one else could be wiser than he is. He's not the only intelligent guy (or gal) in the room.

And PS: He's a little too onboard with foreign involvements, instead of saying those troops should be protecting OUR borders. And he's been the "sounds of silence" lately about sending invaders home.
