As we have been reporting since April, the army of Syrias president Bashar al-Assad has been increasingly showing signs of collapse, losing one major city after another either to the Islamic State (IS or ISIS or ISIL or Daesh) or to the al-Qaeda linked Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front). The collapse has become so serious that even Russia is considering ending support for al-Assad, as we reported a few days ago.
Al-Assad has been mostly relying on fighters from Hezbollah, but even Hezbollah has been suffering substantial losses, between 700 and 2000 fighters, according to reports. Hezbollah claims that its purpose is to be the army of resistance against Israel, but the disastrous situation in Syria has forced Hezbollah to transfer hundreds of fighters from the border with Israel into the fight in Syria.
But now in a major escalation in the (proxy) war in Syria, Iran is planning to deploy tens of thousands of troops in Syria to prevent the fall of al-Assad. 15,000 to 20,000 troops are already being sent to the region around Idlib, and up to 50,000 are reportedly on the way.

and Harf said they can go above or below 50000 troops, as long as at the end of the month, they are back at 50000.
There is dumb and then there is Harf dumb..
you can call me all kinds of names, but if someone calls me a Harf, it’s go time.
on a serious note. we only care that they keep slaughtering each other, right? we have no horse in the race, do we? although ISIS taking over Syria would be bad.
Only American Pharoah < / attempt at humor >
lol
Pretty much how I see it. I hope Iran props up Assad. The longer ISIS is held at bay the better.
Others like McCain and Graham think there are moderates to arm. The ones they previously armed joined the jihadis and gave ISIS their weapons.
stay away = let them battle it out - no trainers, no material, no air support.
Just protect Iraq, Israel, Jordan and Egypt.
Won’t the Iranians, who are Shia, be fighting ISIS, who are Sunni?
And isn’t this what everyone wants is for ISIS to be destroyed?
Exactly right. But it’s probably in our interests for BOTH sides to be destroyed in their war.
The Iran-Iraq war is still on.
I say pull back and let them kill each other..
I think we would like it to all pan out in a way that gives us a degree of influence over the region as opposed to Russia ending up as the regions primary guiding force. As always, our primary goal is to keep the oil trade coupled to the US dollar. so, we do have a horse in the race with that respect.
I say nuke them all now. All of them.
L
That’s the way I see it. But they won’t be destroyed, perhaps degraded in their ability to go after other targets than each other ... which is good.
Either way, there will always be a certain number who will want to attack us ... probably with our own weapons and training!
Stretching the attempted humour even farther.
A suggestion for McLame?
Sounds good to me. There’s still time....
